All I've heard is Paynter, Boyd and Rhodes... I'd have Jermaine Beckford though.

Okay.

kicking off with Billy Paynter from Leeds. Rumoured bid of £500K. Seems more than his market value given they got him on a free (okay so a hefty signing-on fee) and he has been as good as useless for them. Coventry also supposedly in the mix and that is the main question mark against him being the striker that Gus has been chasing and expected to sign yesterday. If it's been going on a while, how come it's only just come to light that we and one other club are "considering bids"?

Still if it is Paynter.........................Leeds fans hate him, nicknaming him "barndoor" and "puffing billy" and rating him overweight and lazy. His move there after two successful seasons with Swindon has clearly been little short of a disaster and he scored just one goal last season.

On the face of it he seems a strange choice but if you think about it, Grayson invariably seems to have Leeds playing one man up front with support from deep lying strikers/advanced midfielders whereas his two outstanding seasons were in a striking partnership with Cox and Austin respectively. Although he had one exceptional scoring season alongside Austin his main strength was creating chances for his partners to take. We play two upfront, sometimes even three. Alongside CMS and with one of either Barnes, Hoskins or Buckley in support plus a genuine winger in Noone or LuaLua, he could well be a key part of the jigsaw that will take us towards the Premiership. On form he certainly has the "presence" that Gus has said he is seeking....the question is whether he can rediscover the form that made him a top target for Leeds when they went up to the Championship?

comment from a Leeds' fan: "If we lined up the people offering to drive him there, the M25 would be gridlocked"
:D

I hope it's not Paynter, injury prone and the one goal last season proves he isn't all that in the championship, he has had one good season and that was when Swindon got to the play-off final. If we were to get him i'd support him not matter what, although if he starts to get shit then that's a whole different ball game :lolol:

It certainly would be underwhelming if we got Paynter, but I trust Gus. Every signing so far has been exceptional; CMS, Buckley, Harley and even Hoskins in the game he played.

In Gus we trust.

If we did sign Paynter Gus would turn him around no problem. Would be delighted with Rhodes or Cox though!

Poke, Holroyd, Sandaza..

If Sandaza was given more game time, I'm sure we'd all have better memories of him. Poke seems to be doing all right for the reserves, but nothing outstanding.

Holroyd, Baz and Battipiedi were all given chances, looked like there was talent there but could never impress. Fair play to Gus for taking a gamble on them, but he can't do that in this league. Which is why I'm personally hoping against Paynter.

Personally - I think - we'll sign someone from lower League's with good goalscoring record and with the 'presence' Gus is after. I think names like Paynter, Boyd, Rhodes and the rest are not the sort of players we NEED.

You think we have CMS, Barnes, Hoskins - who are all nippy goal scorers but none have any height.

We are signing this striker as back-up for at any point we need to switch to lumping it for the last 20 minutes in a game at some point this/next season. We don't NEED Boyd, Rhodes and Paynter but we do need a target-man.

Someone like that Tounkara or Showunmi would suit us - in my opinion - just fine.

Our good start demonstrates the fact we don't NEED - and i emphasise the NEED - another striker. Hoskins hasn't really been fit at all this season so we've still got him to come back.

In Gus we trust.

Drive by abusing
Im shocked Rob Elliot has joined Newcastle from Charlton, what do the Geordies see in him that I couldn't when we played Charlton?

Even more odd when he was Charlton's third choice behind Ben Hamer & John Sullivan...
Fancy Arsenal to go large on a playmaker tomorrow to keep their fans happy.

Andy Naylor argus Albion editor, says on twitter, pretty much done deal on 1 maybe 2 players! I'm thinking Boyd and paynter, that would disapoint me a little, beckford and cox would be better :) or Lukaku from Chelsea, #never gonna happen!
