Why do they leave so much space between the stands and the pitches at new stadiums? I guess there is a good reason.

Advertising, Safety exits onto those areas etc

So the stewards and police have enough time to catch the FCUM fans before they invade the pitch.

The closer to the pitch fans are, the higher they have to be above the person in front to see all of the pitch.
If the pitch is slightly further away, the terracing steps don't have to be so high.
