I have around £100 to spend on a DAB Digital radio but having been in all the obvious stores and looked on-line I can't make up my mind which one to go for. Sound quality is more important to me than looks and I'd like to have the option of running the radio on batteries as well as mains power but other than that I'm not too fussy. Has anyone recently purchased a DAB Digital radio which they are happy with or can anyone point me in the direction of any independent reviews of radios that they may have seen?

Grateful for any advice on offer please.

Cheers.

I've got the Bush one (can't remember which model but it's grey in colour and currently retails at 50/60 quid) which also runs on batteries if you want it. I've had it for a year, and it sounds ace. It only has one speaker but if you put separate speakers into the line-out socket, it gives you glorious stereo.

I thought of buying one but was told by the salesman that the Worthing area is a waste of time for digital radio as there were hardly any stations avavilable in the area. is this true?

I'm in BN12 but the salesman looked about 15, so I'd have expected him to be up to speed with recent gizmos and gadgets and I needed to be SOLD a digital radio as they are not cheap. Maybe he'd already made his commission for the day and was as rich and succesful as Dwayne :)

Would it be possible for me to pick up Southern Counties Radio (Brighton transmitter) in Shropshire.

I.e. could I listen to SCR Albion match commentry on DAB digital radio? I've tried this on the internet and SCR pushes out the Surrey version of SCR during live comentry on the Albion - presumably this is to keep Premium TV in business ....

I'm in BN13 and get all the main channels with no problem and with a prevailing wind also pick up the Southampton channels giving 36 in total.

Can depend on the quality of your radio. Was advised by specialist dealers (not 15 year old kids) that in areas with average reception such as Worthing, you need to buy a reasonable quality set and not a Bush/Goodmans type effort.

I've got a Panasonic RF-D1 which you can get now for under £80 and it has FM radio as well. Has stereo speakers and sound equaliser and gave best sound of all those I looked at last year.

Sadly not. SCR is only on the multiplexes in Sussex and Surrey... so for (to all intents and purposes) the same reason you can't get it on FM in Salop, you can't get it on digital either.

I suspect the reason that the digital transmitters get the Surrey split is that the BBC has only paid for one version of SCR (ie the one that goes out at daytimes during the week to its whole transmission area) to be sent to the digital transmitter.

I got a Pure Evoke in last year's sales. It's great for FiveLive and BBC SCR, but I don't use it for music radio.

What is the point of buying them if you can't get more channels, and if you get good reception on an ordinary radio?

I have not checked it out but Richer Sounds do have a portable for under £50 in the sale.

I'm wating to get seperates fro the front room, and a CD/DAB boogie box for the kitchen.

These and the Season Ticket are going to take a lot of overtime. :lolol:

Many thanks to everyone for their responses, which were much appreciated.

After much deliberation, I pushed the boat out this evening and bought a Pure Evoke 2. Cost me £50 more than I wanted to spend but the sound quality is superb.

Cheers again.

Overrated and a disappointments would be my comments upon receipt of a DAB radio a few months back. Picks up BBC stations more or less anywhere but Talk Sport and non BBC very hit and miss. SCR picks up Surrey version in North Sussex, great that for Albion commentary, NOT! Ok the info isn’t bad if on the go and the biggest problem I find is you cant guarantee a signal for x y z station and I end up carrying 2 radios around with me which kinds defeats the object of what I thought was great DAB radio. My advice is don’t spend too much on one now until the technology catches up a little.
