2 The linesman who ruled England's goal in the 1966 World Cup as having crossed the line was not from Russia, but where ? Russia

:shootself

I think that might have been me!

Though my technique is just to rattle through it all in 2-3 minutes – if I know it, I know it, gut instinct kinda approach. So that sometimes ends up in not reading the question properly...

I got Question 2 RIGHT, but it seems to have been marked as INCORRECT for some reason.

In 1966, Azerbaijan was part of the USSR, so it's correct to say the linesman, although not 'Russian', was a Soviet. Azerbaijan didn't even exist as an independent state, so it is perfectly acceptable to say he was from the USSR!

I DEMAND a RECOUNT.

I got Question 2 RIGHT, but it seems to have been marked as INCORRECT for some reason.

In 1966, Azerbaijan was part of the USSR, so it's absolutely correct to say the linesman, although not 'Russian', was a Soviet. Azerbaijan didn't even exist as an independent state, so it is perfectly acceptable to say he was from the USSR!

I DEMAND a RECOUNT.

Everyone bar two answered in the knowledge the reference was to a current state, or a state within the USSR.

Azerbaijan (as state within the SSR from 1920) was the most common answer.

Appeal REJECTED.

You cannot deny he was from the USSR! That was his nationality! That is what would have been on his passport!

This really is absolutely SCANDALOUS.

I refer the Rt.hon quiz contestant to my previous post.

If I said Sean Connery was not English, what was he ? Folk would say Scottish and not United Kingdomish.

In the past you have used considerable discretion to give contestants the benefit of the doubt (eg: Manager of Watford? 'Hayden someone'), but NOT on this occasion, when there is no disputing that the answer given was 100% CORRECT! This is an outrage.

It was clearly stated that such leniency would no longer be afforded.

The committee have retired and gone to bed. No further correspondence will be entered into.

The only match this put in the balance was against the other player who gave the same answer. So it makes no difference anyway.

Sorry but he would have said he was from the USSR. I very much enjoy your quizzes but Azerbaijan was not an Independent State until 1991.

It's like saying Geoff Hurst is from Manchester and not accepting England as an answer.

I'd say it's more like saying Geoff Hurst is not from Liverpool, where is he from, and someone answering England and not Manchester.

14 players put the correct answer. 21 in total listed former Soviet Republics.

The answers of USSR would be based on the assumption that Russia was an incorrect nationality given the union's status. Such a question would have been a bit tame and pedantic (and incorrect in its context).

All done.

3 complete guesses from random thought processes trying to think like Brighton Lines.
3 educated a bit, but could be wrong guesses.
9 definites.

Since I seem to be scoring ok and losing, I see relegation back from whence I came staring me in the face.
