Lenovo used to be IBM and they are cracking quality. I am typing off of one now, but it isn't a laptop. I also have a Dell laptop and an Asus laptop, but the Lenovo is definitely quality for money.

I have a Toshiba and the wife has an Acer, my Toshiba is great. Fast and plenty of storage.

I've got an Acer Aspire and it is really good for general use. Has 320gb hard drive, 3gb RAM, intel i3 core processor, Dolby Home Surround speakers and has all the trinkets like webcam,wifi,dvd burner that you would expect as well as 3-4 hrs battery life. It cost £420 a year ago so you'll get better spec for that money know but it gives you an idea of what you can get from an Acer.

Acer really do seem to have fantastic spec for the price. We have no desktop at home but have laptops instead. All are Acer and we're made up with them. We got all ours second hand ( as good as new basically ) for a good price at Saveonlaptops.

My mate who works in business of repairing and replacing laptops advised me to get this one today:

ASUS A52F-EX1240V 4GB Core i3 Laptop - Red at cheap prices | PC World

Seems excellent value and was advised that the i3 processor is the most important thing so if you don't get this, make sure you at least get an I3 or better for your £500

Just bought an Asus A52F 2 weeks ago. Red, 4GB ram, runs at about 2.3mhz, £400. Its MINT

I particularly like the facial-recognition signon. Just sit down in front of it and it logs you in !

Just bear in mind with that software, if someone holds a picture of you in front of the camera it will often let them log into your system!
