The great thing about nationality is you can claim to be (almost)whoever you want - witness all the 'plastic paddys' who claim to be Irish because they've got an Irish granny. Fair enough if that's what you think you are, I've got a mate who was born in Berkshire who calls himself a 'British-born Nigerian'.

The only problem comes when bigotry and intolerance creep in. We've seen a bit of it in this thread with people saying you can't call yourselves English because it's 'not a proper country'. It never stopped the Scots or Welsh pre-devolution from calling themselves Scottish or Welsh even though they weren't 'proper countries'. Fair play to them.

So much personnal view and preference.

But geographically speaking, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are known colectively as Great Britain (= British) and Great Britain is part of Europe (politically too at the moment).

So, if you are English, you are also British and European
If you are Scotish, Welsh or Northern Irish, you are also British and European but definately not English.
