Cynical as I am about spunking away money on this sort of thing, my daughters love it so we watch avidly. However, my daughter pointed out, if the object is to collect samples for future missions to gather - then why can't they just collect new samples when the next ship arrives and save all the time and money on today's mission?
Sorry, forgot to say that I'm trying to stay on topic!

Warning Space Geek...Collecting samples is way down the priority list of objectives for Percy, BUT, it’s important to collect samples ‘before’ humans arrive to avoid contaminated samples, and there are plans in motion to return them. The next rover (if it arrives before humans/privatised space companies eg SpaceX) will have the primary intention of sending samples back. (It will have a mini rocket to launch them back out into space on a trajectory for earth.)
