Why is a last minute winner "lucky" ?

I see it more of an indication of our fitness and determination to keep going till the last.

Forest, Leicester for example we didn't deserve to win, and got a lucky last minute winner. Or your way of looking at it means Bolton didn't get lucky!

The wierd thing is that in the last two or three years we seem to have won a few penalty shoot-outs, but can't seem to score them during a game.

I've got to the point where I don't get particularly excited when we're awarded a penalty now.

We've won nearly all the penalty shoot-outs for quite a few years except at Luton.

Since Gus arrived in November 2009, we have scored 22, and not scored 12 - though one was scored from a rebound, 23-11.

League / FA Cup / League Cup - not including shoot-outs. Numbers in brackets indicate 'points lost' by missing.

Are you saying they're lucky because they were in the last minute, or because over the balance of the game, the better team didn't win? Or was it awarded unfairly?

Just wondering - was Huddersfield's consolation goal against us 'lucky'?

Greats stats! Thank you for looking into the scorers and the serial missers! Can't believe we all forgot Harley's club footed pass-back last season!

As I kind of thought, only just scoring more than half of our penalties.

Is taking a set piece from 12 yards really that difficult?! Apparently so....!!

Balance of play, Forest mullered us, and Leicester we didn't deserve to win, and our last minute 'lucky' goals changed the result. Variance now evening itself out.

Must be stats held somewhere on % success of pen takers. The egg chasers always have that info.
Leon Knight didn't miss very many as I recall whereas AB seems to have missed so many that everyone can recall many of them - is his success rate above 50% ?

Leon Knight wouldn't be allowed to take them the way he use to so comparing his strike rate is no longer applicable.

Yep - missed him out. Ooops.

In summary, since Gus took over...

Forster 2-0 (100%)
Dobbie 1-0 (100%)
Wood 4-1 (80%)
Barnes 9-4 (69%) 10-3 if you count the rebound (77%)
CMS 1-1 (50%)
Dicker 1-1 (50%)
Murray 2-3 (40%)
Bennett 1-2 (33%)
Harley 0-1 (0%)

So 21 from 34, on the plus side our shootout stats are 100% I believe

I said this the other day, on another thread, but once his penalty had been seen on tv, he rarely scored them after that as keepers knew to wait until he'd actually kicked it.
