Michel Kuipers - was he our greatest ever goalie?

Kuipers is definitely unorthodox. I suspect that scouts from bigger clubs had a good look at him in his prime but saw 'flaws' in his game. Lucky old us!

For my money though, Michel is as good a shot stopper as any other BHA keeper in the last 30 years. That and his leadership and character will guarantee him a well deserved legend status.

However, in terms of ALL ROUND goalkeeping ability, in my opinion the top 5 (post 1980) ranking is as follows:

1. Beeney
2. Roberts
3. Keeley
4. Kuipers
5. Moseley

Would probably put Keeley, Beeney and Roberts ahead of him in terms of ability.

But an Albion legend without a doubt

Those would be my thoughts too, but a great servant and superb in his prime (2004-05 especially, before the injury, and in both winning seasons). Overall, Roberts is probably the best keeper I have seen play for the Albion, though only by a short head from Keeley and Beeney.

So, ahead of Kuipers in my time following the Albion, in no particular order are :-

Grummitt, Steele, Moseley, Digweed, Beeney, Keeley, Corrigan and Roberts. That's 35 years worth so god knows who was better in the previous 75 years.

I wouldn't have put Corrigan higher than Kuipers (not for us anyway), and Moseley I would hang a question mark over. I would also say we only got just one dynamite season out of Digweed. Grummitt I can't comment on.

The others I wouldn't argue with too hard.

Was he our greatest ever goalie? No.
Was he a great servant to the Albion. Unquestionably.

Grummitt was the best but he did not play many games. I think Kuipers was the best.

Now for the artist in you, what special party event.

Roll out the Cask (Barrel) for him. Kuipers means Cooper in English.

Our First (Premier) Division goalkeeper was Graham Moseley, I thought he was rather useful, has any other Goalie played a higher standard regulary. I know that is not the only yardstick for measuring quality but I think it goes a long way.
Also Grummitt, Powney, Beeney, Steele (most entertaining) but Kuipers still a legend.

Eric Gill and Brian Powney were both Albion legends, but the best keepers: Geoff Sidebottom, Peter Grummit, Joe Corrigan and Dave Beasant. FDM has made a great contribution to the Albion over the last 10 yrs but not the best ever.

It wasn't just his keeping. It was his PASSION for the club and how he'd go MENTAL when we won, especially a crucial away game.

I luv The Man.

Indeed. I remember doing an escorted crossing from the South Stand to the North Stand at the end of a game a couple of years back - to bore the pants off people on Harty's phone in - and the FDM was collecting his waterbottle and towel from the goal as we reached him. He was so fired up about the victory that had just been achieved that the high five he gave me almost knocked me off my feet.

Top man.

roberts could easily have made a career in at least the upper reaches of the championship and maybe even the premiership. its just a shame that his back raped him of it

Grummit without a doubt, but if you want indivual saves, then the best I ever saw was Kuips wonder save against Wimbledon in a cup game at Withdean, far better than Banksies.

Best? Can't really say as I'm not old enough to know some of the 'competition'.

My personal favourite? No doubt of it whatsoever.

he is a great guy, but I think its stretching it a bit far to say he was the greatest ever. I can name 4 in front of him.

Grummit, Steele, Moseley, Corrigan

PS yes going to the meal!!!

I'd add Keelo to that list too:thumbsup:...... in fact Keelo might well go himself.
