Anyone who can remember what a run down state this country was in before 1979, shouldnt even need to ask the question.

She was without any doubt right for her time.

She did go barking mad in the end, I'll concede that, but Blair and the Labour party had to imitate her policies and style to get elected, and that is her legacy.

Absolutely right SM

I think we'd started taking a tumble long before then . . .by the early 70's things where going wrong

its amazing theat BMC/BL managed to ruin and kill the core of Britains motor industry, when all around them the likes of Ford/BMW/VW/Saab/volvo and the Japs where going from strength to strength

we have turnwed into a nation of useless service industries though we have precious little farming or manufacturing now and can't compete with eastern europe and the far east. its been happening for decades but Thatcher certainly took a few nails out of the coffin and put extra long wood screws in !!!

She represents everything that is wrong in this country today and I am genuinely sad to see the current result of this poll.

Sad or not, that's the reality of the situation. Anyone that believes there'll be dancing in the streets when she goes is wearing the same rose coloured spectacles that her supporters are being accused of using.

Dont be so melodramatic, BIG BROTHER represents everything thats bad about Britain ::D

She set north against south, class against class, England against Scotland. She sharpened the Northern Irish conflict, created a degree of political resentment amongst the people of Britain entirely unmatched since the Regency, and did more to damage our relations with, and standing among, the rest of the world than anyone in the 20th century.

A good leader brings people together; Thatcher did the opposite.

Which is why I only said "in some aspects". Believe me, even saying that was like pulling my ears off with a monkey wrench.

Aahh the rose tinted memories of how grand life was before Thatcher. No strikes. Ever. Especially not tanker drivers, teachers, power workers. I only had to go to school 3 days a week. And because of the rampant inflation my pocket money seemed to double every 6 months.

What happened to change it?

Answer ... Thatcher.

Intresting comment.

Manufacturing economies are wealthier than agrarian ones with higher employment. Service economies are wealthier than manufacturing economies with higher employment. Its due to technological advances, its called progress.

Thatcher was necessary at the time, dont want her back even if she was less senile than she is now.

Her economic policies were imitated globally and led to the long boom many countreies enjoyed in the 90's. We didn't almost go bankrupt that was under Labour when chanceloor Dennis Healy went to the IMF with a begging bowl. Socialism was flawed, hence the collapse of the soviet Union.

The US budget deficit? Whats that got to do with Thatcher? Cyclical overspend, War costs and mismangement maybe but doubt Maggies responsible.

with sounding patronising there are a lot of people here that have no understanding of economics. she took the country from one extreme that wasn't working (demand side) to the other which failed (supply side)

with sounding patronising you are talking out of your arse. I am an Economist what do you do?

So a bit like Renault and especially Fiat. Two car companies "supported by the tax payer" that are losing money hand over fist at the moment, but whose governments see fit to support in any way that they can because it means 30,000 direct employees being OFF THE DOLE QUEUE. Whatsmore, I'll BET that Fiat will stay in Italian hands in the long run and has a future.

Sure, British Leyland cars were crap, but a quality PM would have got to grips with the unions WITHOUT stripping them of their livelihood, IMO. It doesn't take brilliance to shut down entire industries.

Funny how the french economy is going down the pan, the Italian standards of living are falling and BOTH countries have higher unemployment however you measure it.

Why is it so important to be a manufacturing nation?

I think what you actually mean is that our economy is in better shape than theirs right now.

Our GDP is 19% better than the EU average. France's GDP is 13% better than the EU average. So I think "going down the pan" is a bit excessive. It's not like the French have gone to the World Bank, cap-in-hand is it?

They've got some issues to deal with, but their standard of living still isn't bad...
