Auto are ok (but not with a small engine), modern ones drop between 3 and 8 miles to the gallon over manuals so do your homework!! They do make you lasy and your left calf muscle will become porky in size after a few weeks however, you don't drop the mobile phone in panic to change gear ...so it is not all bad!
