"United say the entire project has the potential to create 92,000 new jobs, will involve the construction of 17,000 homes and bring an additional 1.8 million visitors to the area annually. They add the project will be worth an additional £7.3bn per year to the UK economy."

"He said there was no date in place for when building work on the stadium would begin, adding: "It depends how quickly the Government gets going with the regeneration programme. I think they want to get going quite quickly."

Sounds like it, yes...

Why should the rest of the country pay for Man U's stadium? Let Sir Jim pay for it himself, like Tony paid for ours. Or can Bloom send a bill to the government for the Amex?

Polarising opinions on here.
From an architectural perspective, I think it looks awful as well (Zippos Big Top Circus Tent..."roll-up, roll-up for a BHA 1-3 away victory). But then I also think Norm's Wembley is hugely overrated too with the bolt-on/afterthought arch. It's not a patch on the new Bernabéu Stadium.

All that patchwork glass/steel umbrella lattice will look sh*te after a few Manchester winters. But it will be the best ground in the Championship at least :ascarf:

Don't get me wrong. I think the iniative is great and would really be priceless for Manchester with everything that comes with the construction, infrastructure, lift for the surrounding area, additional income, global landmark, etc. If I was Mancunian or a Manure fan I would be very excited.

I'm not big fan of the design, it does look like a circus tent.

Not the first vanity project someone’s come up with to feed their legacy ego. Hopefully the local and UK taxpayer won’t get too fleeced if (IF) it ever comes to fruition.

Doesn’t the statement suggest that the stadium will need ‘investors’. ( so not the Govt).
Will be interesting to see this one unfold.
£2billion is a huge cost.
Also , call me cynical, but the timing of the announcement is interesting with the protests at the weekend!

Well, in the interview with Neville, Sir Jim said the club wouldn't need public money to build the stadium but that they would need it to be the center-piece of the regeneration effort that was already previously announced by the Government. I read that more as the club will benefit from the improved transport links and road infrastructure around the ground without having those costs but that the Government won't actually be paying for the stadium itself. Technicality maybe, and it made me think about the amount of work the Albion had to do on the A27. I seem to recall we had to pay for the redesign of the road and the new bridge and expansion work that was mandatorily required.
Firstly, I take anything that the people running football clubs (and I include Lord Tony and P Barby in that, but to a much lesser degree) with a massive pinch of salt. Announcing a £2bn stadium shortly after delivering news of job losses, cost-cutting and general penny-pinching all over the shop is a massive misstep, if you ask me. He's trying to get in the good books of the Glazers (possibly planning a takeover at some point) and using this huge (literally) vanity project as a way of doing it.

Even if the Government wasn't/isn't stumping up any cash, he's not exactly going to do it out of the goodness of his heart so SOMEONE will have to pay a lot of it. And there's a very good chance that someone will be matchday supporters.

My money is on a Middle Eastern State funding it.

Maybe, given that City got the Commonwealth stadium, it's a Manchester thing?

I agree, they definitely shouldn't pay for the stadium, but I wouldn't be surprised if some public cash was funnelled in that direction. Well played, OJ :tosser:
