I don't think funding it will be a problem, the sale of the current OT site and securing loans shouldn't be a problem considering it's Man Utd. How much of that debt will be on crippling interest rates is another story, but I'm sure they'd get plenty of Investors wanting on board. The regeneration side of it looks fantastic, not sure I like the big top circus look, but that's just me.

Sussex but not by the sea
They won't redevelop Old Trafford because it's all about the corporate or executive seats. The FA could easily have redeveloped Wembley but that wouldn't deliver what they wanted = about 200 exec boxes and thousands of 'club Wembley' seats. It's long term cheaper (and quicker) to start again. It was the same with Spurs, Goodison and also the plans for St James Park. Palace really should too but obviously they are close to opening the new main stand now so it only leaves the Arthur Wait to go....

There is no guarentee that those plans won't change. Originally they were going to keep the Wembley twin towers, in fact it was a requirement at one point, however once the old stadium started to be knocked down they suddenly found a reason why they couldn't.

Away with the fairies
I quite like the Salford Quays/Media City area that sits beside Old Trafford and would say it's already one of the UK's most successful urban regeneration projects.

I can't quite get my head around why the area a 5-minute walk away would qualify for so much public money. I understand why Man U would be interested in building a new stadium, but to claim this part of Manchester/Salford is in need of huge government hand-outs to make it happen seems questionable.

The new stadium will be built on the Trafford Park rail-freight terminal. To make room the train depot will have to be moved 20 miles away to St Helens. Taxpayers will be funding the move which could run to 100's of millions.
