Anyone else ramped up their concern? Can’t see this being an isolated case in this area.

Very much so.

This herbert arrived back here some time last week and went to A&E Sunday night, so there's been plenty of time to spread it around.

Added to the fact my daughter works at the Royal Sussex. Not in A&E, she's on a post-op recovery unit, but its a worry to say the least.

Interesting one regarding the cruise ships in quarantine

It is very draconian what they do. You are escorted to your cabin and the balconies ( if you have one) are locked and your cabin door is locked. You are basically in a prison, but in a prison you can go and exercise BUT on a cruise ship you are not allowed out!

If you are unfortunate to have an inside cabin ( no windows only artificial light) you are basically worse off than in a prison cell with bars! Imagine if you have kids with you! You get fed and watered through the door. This has happened to people we have gone on cruises with in the past where a ship was hit by Norovirus...mainly because ignorant people do not take the alcohol wash when they go into restaurants and don’t wash their hands after the loo.

My concern was ramped up about two weeks ago. I even purchased some face masks and tried to put it to the back of my mind thinking things would get better, it hasn't.

Why is he a 'herbert'? What was he meant to do - he wasn't travelling from China.

Let’s all panic and lose our heads. SarS infected people in this country too. It’s not even a declared pandemic yet by WHO. What has changed since SARS is the digital age meaning people can instantly get worked up about stuff completely unnecessarily on other side of the world often.

Keep calm. Carry on. Worry about Watford instead I say.

This guy

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-51364382

the Doctor who tried to raise the alarm about the virus... has died from the virus.

[tweet]1225429678816669698[/tweet]

He was 34 years of age.

He was first exposed to the virus in late December, taken ill 10th january, dies 25 days later, aged 34.

If this is anywhere near 'normal' we're in the very early stages of this thing. Maybe the first to succumb were the elderly with pre existing conditions, but now?

And the fact that borders have been closed, citizens repatriated, flights stopped into and out of a country, mega cities curfewed and quarantined, new hospitals built in days...

If I was writing a new zombie film this would be the opening montage....

I did to, over a week ago, most sold out on eBay/Amazon and some ridiculous profiteering going on.

If it helps Anyone on NSC?, the recommendation (international standard) is to get a N95 (blocks 95%) mask or better as these will block it (plus alcohol hand wash regularly).

In the UK we often use different standards to the N95, we have FFP1, FFP2, FFP3. The FFP1 is lower/worse than N95, the FFP2 is roughly equivalent and FFP3 is even better protection.

You can find FFP2 and FFP3 masks at Toolstation and Screwfix for normal prices if in stock. Screwfix you can buy today if your chosen store has stock and collect within 21 days. Quite a few alternatives, Just checked 1 of the FFP3 masks (set of 2) and in stock at Worthing and Newhaven for £3.49

I saw his photo a few days ago, and was thinking earlier I hope he is OK, and then about 4pm I heard he had passed away. It's very worrying all this now.

He was first exposed to the virus in late December, taken ill 10th january, dies 25 days later, aged 34.

If this is anywhere near 'normal' we're in the very early stages of this thing. Maybe the first to succumb were the elderly with pre existing conditions, but now?

Any idea if he had a pre-existing condition or was vulnerable to the virus?

Most things I have read suggest the fatalities are predominantly in these groups, not healthy 34 year old doctors.

I'm not one for wild flights of fancy or to over-react, but this outbreak worries me A LOT.

Reasons?

  1. The long incubation period for this virus, coupled with it being contagious BEFORE the symptoms show almost certainly means that the virus has spread already, and we're just waiting for it appear.
  2. The fact that this seemingly young and healthy doctor has succumbed to the virus, and the length of time he was ill with it both worry me.
  3. The fact that this first appeared in a secretive totalitarian state also worries me, as we have little confidence in any information coming out. Normally the totalitarian part, with less free travel in/out would help, but point 1 above limits the upside.

True! But wouldn’t be very original. This sort of thing has happened before though. I recall not being able to go to China in 2003, had to amend my world trip too. The public’s capacity to panic is endless and I see no point in doing so that’s all. Life is deadly. So deadly it kills you someday. It’s winter and all sorts of bugs are flying around killing people as usual, young old and everyone inbetween. Accept there’s little you can do, that probably the vast majority of the world will be ok and try not to spend all the time you are afforded inbetween worrying about the inevitable. I’ve lost two of the most precious people in my life recently more deserving of life than me. I’d swap places in a heartbeat. The bravery they exhibited was off the scale, it’s changed me and my outlook forever and I will try my best to follow their example when my turn comes. If it helps, I’m feeling really unwell today and have a bad case of what I believe is a common cold. Could be something much more serious I guess but probably not. If it is, then my numbers up and nothing I can do except say Love you all, UTA, Down with Archer and...where did the Cup Final money go?! Stay safe. :)

Mrs T works at the Sussex and her opinion is that it's all just a load of scaremongering by the media. I don't share her optimism, but hope she's right.

I can’t believe some of the panicky crap I’m reading on here.....

Wondering how I’ve managed to stay alive this long to be honest. I’ve not worn a face mask or anything.
