Curiously, his version of what was going on didn't seem to tie in much with what I was reading in Gulls Eye.

Back in the day I remember television shops always had a tv facing out the window with the vidiprinter on....and a huddle of blokes come 4:45.

That could still be going on - I remember being out a couple of years ago at 4.45 and there were a few of us looking at the scores. Although many people have smartphones with Internet access, the majority of people haven't - it wouldn't surprise me if people still did this.
