Hughes hunted after hit-and-run death crash Nov 23 2003

Detectives are today hunting a footballer accused of running from the scene of a road crash in which an elderly man died.

West Bromwich Albion striker and former Sky Blues star Lee Hughes is alleged to have fled the scene following the crash on the outskirts of Coventry.

The 27-year-old is not thought to have suffered any serious injuries, but has been urged by officers to contact his nearest police station.

Police said that his silver Mercedes CL55 coupe was in a collision with a Renault Megane as it turned into Pickford Grange Lane.

A West Midland police spokeswoman said: "A man aged in his 60s who was a rear seat passenger in the Megane died from his injuries and his wife, who was also a passenger, is currently in Coventry and Warwickshire hospital with a broken leg.

"The male driver suffered a broken pelvis and another male passenger suffered bruising."

She said there were five men in the Mercedes, which was involved in the accident just after midnight.

"The male driver of the Mercedes left the scene with one of the passengers, three other passengers remained at the scene and inquiries are on-going to find the driver.

"We would urge him to come forward and to contact his local police station."

I wouldn't worry about him, he is rubbish.

He will get off, but if it was you or I we would get proper bollocked for it. Are West Brom trying to contact him or anything? It doesn't look good for them does it :(

It happened Saturday night didn't it ? Reports say the police actually broke his front door down looking for him.
Clearly he was off his face, and has done a runner to get the alcohol out of his system before he hands himself in, there can be no other explanation. What a f***ing scumbag.

Bet he wishes his face wasn't quite so well known in the Midlands now!

He'll be keeping away from the Wolverhampton area then, there'll be 20,000 people dialling the old bill within seconds if he shows his face around there....

Crash inquiry police seek player

Four men who were in the Mercedes have been questioned
Police are believed to be continuing their search for the West Bromwich Albion footballer Lee Hughes following a car crash in which an elderly man died.
The striker is understood to have been at the scene of the crash in Warwickshire in the early hours of Sunday.

West Midlands Police said they had been unable to trace a 27-year-old man, despite visiting his home and contacting his employers.

A West Midlands police spokeswoman said: "Officers have visited his home and also contacted friends and his employers, but have not yet traced the man."

Fourth man found

Police confirmed that five men were in the car at the time of the accident.

Three were questioned at the scene and a fourth has subsequently been interviewed.

The police spokeswoman said: "Three men were spoken to following the incident.

"Police have now traced another man and spoken to him. We are still searching for the last man."

Police say a silver Mercedes CL55 coupe and a Renault Megane were in collision at the junction between the A45 Birmingham Road and Pickford Grange Lane in Meriden, Warwickshire.

Broken pelvis

A Coventry man in his 60s who was a rear seat passenger in the Megane, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

His wife, who was also a passenger, was treated at Coventry and Warwickshire hospital for a broken leg.

The police spokeswoman said: "The male driver suffered a broken pelvis and another male passenger also suffered bruising."

West Midlands Police are appealing for witnesses.

West Bromwich Albion Football Club has so far refused to comment.

Where did the accident happen?

In Coventry.

If he had been drinking and driving it will have been bad enough but he's made it ten times worse now.

They're going to throw the book at him.

Obviously if he was drunk they won't be able to prove it by the time he shows his face but there must be a strong possibility he'll be locked up for killing someone then doing a bunk??
