I've flown in to LA. Drove to SFO then Oregon, down to LAS and back to LA in 2 weeks.
Stayed in Motel 6 which Is a cheap chain but was only sleeping there and cheap.

DO NOT EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT!!!

Stayed in the Luxor for one night, and it was other-worldly. The only way you could tell it was 5am was the fact that there was some poor bloke sticking a hoover round, while everyone else carried on like normal. The concept of 'time' does not exist in Vegas.

Nice hotel though, decent rooms. Also, be prepared to be stopped by a hooker every 10 metres if you walk down the strip.

The posh bit
Hi

I have done this. Good trip.

Vegas full of glitz and expensive hotels but also lots of less so. I have stayed at new York new York which is a great play ground for adults. I have also stayed on the horse shoe in the old town part - Fremont street. It was also good fun but a bit old fashioned.
Drive to la is about 4 hours. Not much to see on way.
Stayed in Santa Monica nut pricey and Hollywood a bit seedy but cheaper. Do Venice beach walk to Santa Monica on boulevard.
Malibu beach is just north of la worth a half day.
The drive up the coast Is fun. Drive the big sur.. Cliff face pacific high way- quite hairy in parts. Watch out for the elephant seals on the beach , quite rare.
Stay in Santa Barbara on way up- nice town. Can take a boat trip out to the bay to see the Whales- we saw blue Whales , which are truly enormous.
Carmel is just before Santa Barbara and quite a sweet little place.

San fran is different again. Bit less plastic and has character, although seedy also. The bay is good, with great bars on the front.

Enjoy, we did.

The best way to get a cheap hotel room in Vegas is to ring the hotels card room and ask them for the poker rate.

They never check up on whether you actually play poker or not..

I always stay at the Bellagio, which is a genuine 5 star hotel, and get it for $99 a night using the method above instead of the usual rate of about $200 per night.

The phone number of the Bellagio card room is 001 702 693-7290

Other tips:

Steakhouse: Prime at Bellagio

Japanese: Hyakumi at Caesars Palace

Strip club: Speamint Rhino or Cheetars (definitely avoid Treasures, Olympic Garden and the Girls of Glitter Gulch)

Gambling: Avoid playing Roulette on wheels where there are two zeros and Blackjack where the dealers draw a card on soft 17. Usually you get deal from the plushest casinos.. the Wynn, the Bellagio or City Centre. If you plan on gambling alot don't be shy about asking the pit bosses for free meals or shows.

Sights: Go up to the top the stratosphere in the evening, the views are amazing. Free shows in the Venitian are great. Go and see Love at the Mirage.. the best show I've ever seen.

Drinks: If you are gambling drinks are free. But make sure to tip the waitress $1 for each drink in the round.

Last tip: don't carry all your money round with you. Temptation (gambling, drinking and beautiful girls) is everywhere - and so are pickpockets and theives. Leave lots of cash (and your credit cards!)in your hotel safe, you'll be thankful in the morning!

Have fun!

Vegas....stayed at Bally's,book a room and as many as you like can sleep there.Old strip does amazing video show ,the whole strip is a video screen above you.Drove to the Grand Canyon,Death Valley which actually has the lowest golf course in the world, drive round the Salt flats and round the corner is the golf course with grass like a snooker table. Stratosphere 1000 feet of wonder. See how many of the rides you dare to take...I only managed the chair that shoots up the tower at high speed...the other two were no no for me. Bellagio great water fountain.Careful that you don't get pulled in by hookers, some great girls and on the cards they have have prices like $60...they come to the room, start stripping then ask for 5/600 dollars, you protest that the card said $60 and they tell you that that price is just to get them there.Great trip, have a look around. Under Ballys is an underground street with shops made up to be a Paris street,Paris hotel next door, with a tower one third of the real thing in size, the street underground goes under this and other hotels and goes on quite a distance, changing into a street in Morrocco, all with a painted sky above you.Try to avoid the tables, slot machines everywhere, get a lot of rich old ladies who just stick a credit card in slot and play all night. Food is good, beer fairly cheap. Have a great time,I'd certainly would go back there.

It's all about the Wynn in Vegas. By far the best hotel there and if you scout around on the net you can get a double room for around $100 a night.

This. Without a doubt.

And if you like the beatles go and watch 'Love' at the Mirage. Unbelieveable.

Book the revolving restaurant at the Stratosphere, a top night out, go on a Gondola at the Venietian and do the Grand Canyon Trip.

If you are going in an all male party, just be aware that every girl that talks to you in the majority of bars is on the game, if any of your party do sucumb to temptation leave all your valuables with another member of the party downstairs, and dont let the girl out of your sight once she's in your room.

If you're after a cheap hotel that centre strip then try Bills Gamblin' Hall. It right next to the Flamingo and you can use the Flamingo's pool (one of the best in town).
As others have said the view from the Stratosphere is great as is jumping off it - $99 for a cable jump. At the south end of the strip the view from Mix bar at the top of THEHotel is pretty stunning at night too.
If you like cars then try the museum in the Imperial Palace which has some great autos.
Oh and remember to look for online discount vouchers and vouchers in the visitors guides too for saving money on attractions.

I stayed at the Imperial Palace, it's right on the main part of the strip (opposite Ceasar's) and you can get some dirt cheap rooms there. TBH unless you're looking for a swanky room most hotels offer pretty cheap rates, that's not where they make their profits.

Tropicana,now clean,cheap and cheerful.

Go to Circus Circus, esp if you are with youngsters.

Blackpool in the Desert. It's great. Don't trust the open top bus to be on time. Never pay full price for a show. Never take the cards from the street people.

Do take in Yosemite and the GC if you can,and if you get to San Francisco try NOT to get ambushed by the Bushman. My underwear didn't survive.

Suggest you head north from Vegas, crossing death valley, beautiful desert, get out and walk a bit it's stunning - Panamint valley next, there is a great motel at the top of the hill for cold beers and if you stay the night, sometimes you get f16's from 'China Lake' airbase doing an expensive private air show for you at dusk. - Owens valley next, driving alongside the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountains, Mt.Whitney 14,000+ft here, highest in USA outside of Alaska, you can drive up to about 8,000ft for great views across the valley.- Drive up to Lake Mono on this road, very interesting lake with volcanic rocks etc (NOT FOR SWIMMING!!!) rather chemically water - Take a left up over the Sierras through Yosemite, stunning, you'll wannna stop here - Then to Frisco, lots to see here, then down to Carmel, use the coast road rather than the highway, it's beautiful, half moon bay etc a little slower but well worth it if you like oceans and spectacular cliffs. 18 mile drive at carmel is worth doing and if you've won the lottery some nice houses here!!! Down coast to LA (horrible place but just my opinion) Hope you've got enough time to take that route, but don't if you just like cities etc.

Went to Vegas via LA to watch boxing and am taking wife next year. Our plan is Vegas, Grand Canyon, Memphis (Gracelands) Nashville, Louisville, then home via Chicago. Lot of miles but brother is driving so no problem. Added bonus is he worlks for BA so hotels are greatly reduced like 50% normal.
