Have been to all 3 places, but I think you've already got enough info on Veges.
San Fransisco, loved it. There are the obvious sights i.e Alcatraz, but as you have a car drive across the Golden Gate Bridge upto Redwood. The trees are some of the tallest I have seen anywhere. Also drive down the ziggy zaggy road (even just to say that you have done it) A must is driving the tolleys.
We stayed in santa Monica. The pier is based on Brighton pier (there is a plaque that says so). The carolsel is the one that was used in the Sting (and Magnum Force I believe). William Hurst (media mogul - Rupert Murdoch of his day) built a mansion in the LA hills and thats worth a visit - just to see the opulence. I would hire a bike and ride along the beach to Venice beach and then as far as you can cycle. Brill ride and some very characters to see.
We also visited Warner Bros studious (Burbank), very iteresting if you enjoy film etc and much better than the Universal ones (which are more theme parked). If you are tempted take your passport just in case (they were on security alert when we went).
I would avoid the "Stars houses" trips, unless you enjoy looking at hedges or cracks in driveways.
