Did anyone else read Thursday,s incest story in the Daily Mail of a young Germam brother and sister meeting up after being seperated when they were young. They have had four children between them and if i recall correctly all the children are handicapped in some way. However out of interest how far down the family line does it become safe for couples to have children ?? :albion:

If you're from Portsmouth it is socially acceptable to procreate with your siblings and parents

As someone who once taught a university course called "Incest and Exogamy", I could provided some specialist advice here.

In simple terms, it's possible to organise whole societies on the basis that everyone marries their cousin ... provided that everyone chooses the right sort of cousin. Men must marry their mother's brother's daughter and women must marry their father's sister's son. This ensures that genes flow down the generations in a perfectly safe way and that property inheritance rules can be maintained without causing society to break down.

Matrilateral cross-cousin marriage, as it's called, has formed the basis for quite a lot of small-scale human societies over the millennia.

If people want to read more, I recommend Les Structures élémentaires de la parenté by the great Claude Lévi-Strauss.

"Napoleon abolished France's incest laws in 1810. Neither is it a crime in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal or Turkey. Japan, Argentina and Brazil have also legalised it in recent years"

The strange thing about all this is, the fact that these countries have all legalised it seems to suggest that the respective governments have come under public pressure to do so.

"The massed ranks of the Devon & Cornwall Coalition For Inter-Familial Relationships cheered wildly in Whitehall as their leader handed over the Keep Incest Alive petition to a Downing Street representative"

Incredibly, I don't think it was at my old seat of learning, the University of East Anglia. Although they did have a "local studies centre", so it was probably all covered by that...

After my extensive studies on incest I believe there is a 33% chance the child will be handicapped. this appears to be reason enough for immediate family members not to have the sex. However I'm not sure why it is such a social taboo.
