Iggy Pop the RACIST

Anyone else see the cringeworthy moment on Sunday morning, around 2am, when Iggy Pop talked about 'paki shops' during an interview on the Glastonbury coverage?

Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe didn't bat en eye-lid and just spent the next five minutes kissing up to him.

Idiots.

I saw this! Me and my mates couldn't actually believe he'd said it. Whiley is a sycophantic arse-kisser at the best of times, so it doesn't surprise me that she said nothing about it

I hate all that radio 1 mob at Glastonbury, except the guy who used to be in the Fall, Mark something or other, the rest are so middle of the road, you may as well have Mike read and kid jensen doing the show.

Why?

He is a celebrity who should know better.

If he was a big brother contestant and not a music icon he would have been SLATED.

I think it is a DISGRACE the way the presenters ignored the comment.

I used to love Iggy Pop but after seeing that interview I just think he is a narrow-minded biggot.

did not see it but was he off his nut or maybe doing it for effect - old punk rock shock tactics, like Siouxsie Sioux wearing swastika armbands in the early dyas of her career to shock, something I doubt she is proud of today

Have to agree Richie. It was racist. It was shocking that the presenters didn't bat an eyelid. Typical of the shameful psychophants radio DJs have become. Mr Peel must be turning in his grave.

No excuse really. If it was shock tactis than he really should know better and surely someone of his status does not have much need for this sort of behaviour anymore?

Especially as he stole the show with his superb live set. His comments just soured his performance.

The fact he then had a pop at Radcliffe but all the SAP did was go on about what an honour it was to talk to Iggy Pop just sums him and his fellow presenters up.

Yes, like most things in this celebrity obsessed culture we need challenge more instead of the usual blind acceptance

What was the context of his use of the term "Paki Shops".

If he was describing a type of shop then this is a clear description of the generic shop that is on many street corners in this country.

If he was refering to the owners of the shops in a derogatory way, then that could be described as racist.

So what was it? Was he being offensive, or using a term of phrase that is in common use throughout the UK and perhaps the US too. (not by me I hasten to add)

This was at 2am, a time when you can watch violent films and programs, gangsta rap videos on MTV glorifying murder, rape, racialism, prostitution and robbery, and if you're that way inclined hard core porno, so is this being over reacted to?

I'm not defending him, just asking for a little more information before I form an opinion.

The punk movement came at a time that the NF were trying to get attention, and be represented among the disquieted youth. The swastika was probably as much an anti-semitism statement against the entertainment establishment, as anything.
The NF canvassed outside gigs by Sham 69 and The Damned, among others - but I believe they were not necessarily welcomed by the bands in general.
The Dead Kennedy's told Nazi Punks f*** Off, and political groups glomming onto band's audiences weren't usually encouraged.

Maybe Siouxsie Sioux did entertain a political stance for a moment, but I doubt even she would relate to the sort of mongs that were the National Front.

It would be interesting to ask Iggy Pop (with the Germanic real name of Osterberg), what his meaning was, and whether he actually knew what it meant to say that stuff in Britain.

Yeah, like its not racist to go down the 'chinky'. I forgot about that.

That's what I mean. It sounds like a comment made to describe a situation. Even Asians use the same term. And far worse on occasion.

I walk around some of the ethnic areas of our cities on a regular basis, especially north London and South West London, and you hear these terms in use all the time, by people of all colours, so it seems like a bit of a storm in a teacup to me.

Personally I would prefer not to hear it at all. and I think Radcliffe should have said something.

Like it has been said, is the term "going for a chinky" any better or worse than saying "I went in a Paki Shop"

Its probably a generation thing. My dad always refers to our newsagent as the "paki" shop. I dont use it but he does not mean any offence although I can see why people would be offended.

I hasten to add he is not racist as Bulldog said my dad has been using the newsagents for about 20 years.

As Phil said depends on the context.

Bit like the word GAY

Its had 3 meanings now.

For my parents it meant happy.

For me it meant homosexual.

For my kids it actually means pants or not very good.

Punk has a dodgy history here. Let's not forget the Pistols wrote a song called Belsen Was a Gas. There's no defence to this, no matter how much you want to shock people.

My view of Iggy, for what it's worth, is that he's both a musical giant who's made a string of brilliant records and a bit of a berk.
