I think we would have gone under. Playing in the conference at Gillingham would have surely been financially impossible. However I think the reformed Albion would have struck through the pyramid pretty quickly. We would I suspect be back in the league by now, but still at Withdean, a bit like where AFC Wimbledon are now. Falmer I regret a non starter.
I would have supported the reformed Albion though with maybe a few more trips to Schalke as a consequence. I would not have supported another English league team.

The phoenix club wouldn't have been Brighton and Hove Albion, that would have died. The same as AFC Wimbledon are not the real Wimbledon or any of the other AFC's.

Thats true, but as far as the fans are concerned its probably the same thing. The new Aldershot is different to the old Aldershot. Acrington Stanley was formed out of the wreckage of the old Accrington Stanley in 1968. The new Chester may not be Chester City, but they play at the Deva Stadium and have the same fans, strip - essentially the same club.

Very few clubs that get relegated to the Conference completely disappear - I think it's only Chester, Scarborough and Maidstone that don't exist any more (though I fully expect someone to tell me I'm wrong!) I'd have been heart broken if we'd lost at Hereford, but I think I'd still be following the club, albeit probably in a much lower league.

Chester FC are currently 4th in the Northern Premier League (7th tier), two divisions below where Chester City ended up and where Scarborough had been relegated to when they were wound up; Scarborough Athletic are two divisions further down in the Northern East Counties Premier League (9th tier) and have just returned to a ground in Scarborough having been ground-sharing with Bridlington. The new Maidstone United play in the Isthmian League Division 1 South (8th tier) having had seven promotions since reforming, before being relegated from the Premier Division last season. They still groundshare but hope to have a new stadium ready for 2012-13.

What if there had been 2 lots of supporters starting up 'New Albions' ? Which would have been the real one ? Neither as the real Albion would have been laid to rest.
Why couldn't the reformed club have been Brighton and Hove Albion? Both Accrington Stanley and Bradford Park Avenue reformed under their original names and consider themselves to be 'reborn' clubs rather than new ones. And in Bradford's case for a short while there WERE actually two clubs called Bradford Park Avenue as the original phoenix club was a Sunday League team and continued for a while even after a new Saturday team had been launched.

In any case the actual legal entity is irrelevant, the fans are the club, not the paper records at Companies House: if us Brighton fans had carried on then it WOULD have been Brighton and Hove Albion - same fans same history.

Chester are still going. They're in the NPL Premier or whatever its called these days. Same ground, slightly different name (just Chester not Chester City). In the end they actually wanted to be liquidated as it gave them the chance to clean the slate, get rid of the old owners and start again. Ditto Halifax.

EDIT: And yes, I would have supported the reborn Brighton and Hove Albion. If by some chance we had given up and not bothered I think I might have switched sports and gone to watch rugby, or become a full-time 'plastic' Avenue fan.

EDIT AGAIN: I notice that Kalimantan has made similar points!

I would probably have made the effort to go and watch a London side, especially as I had a train season ticket...possibly Chelsea or arsenal. I know quite a few gooners and would have gone with them.

Even after 35 years now, I know, and am reminded occasionally, that I am not Brighton born and bred and started supporting Brighton prely because we moved here. If we had moved anywhe else, I would have supported the local side( with Huddersfield my second team obviously)

I would have taken up golf earlier than I did, become a Pro, won a couple of Majors and become a multi millionaire.:cheery:

Or more likely sat at home every saturday watching Final score thinking what could have been,:(

I really don't know what I would have done if Albion had died; they are my only team, my only football love.

I do know that my resentment of Archer, Belloti and co. would have intensified still further and might have broken out into action...... I think they got off lightly, and I am still fuming!

I would have devoted my time to what was my local club for years Ferring FC with occassional trips to White Hart Lane. In fact my life has gone the other way stopped my association with Ferring because I never went to watch them due to Brighton but that happened long before Hereford.t When Ferring reformed I was asked to help out which I did for about 6 months but never went to watch them so it is virtyually certain I would have carried on with them.

I remember at the time thinking about this and coming to the conclusion that I would have supported my dad's local team when he was a kid....Wimbledon! So I would have supported two professional clubs into oblivion!

That said, the lure of a new Brighton team would have been attractive - I just didn't see that as an option at the time.
