Would without a doubt be more expensive if it was in the outside world.

Personally I'd usually go through 4 loads a week, at we'll say £3.50 = 15 quid, 15*52 = 780 quid. That'd buy one of those hyper Dyson washer dryers let alone a bog standard washing machine... even if it was only £2, unlikely, its £400 a year.

Yeah, but laundrette machines are bigger, so you can wash all the things that a normal machine can't as well as heaps of clothes. Laundrettes are also a great place to socialise. They should put a bar in ours. Would get loads of business.

Funny isn't it - I'd have thought that a washing machine was a necessity for everyone - but you've just proven that it isn't!

So did I actually. I was looking at flats for next year, and about half of them don't have washing machines. At £500 a month, I'd expect a washing machine for that. One of them offered a coin operated communal washing machine. I didn't fancy that either.

To be honest, I'm the kind of person who would happily hand wash their clothes if necessary.

I lived in an apartment in New York which had a communal laundry. It wasn't too bad to be honest, didn;t like it at first and sat there watching it go round, but after a while I got used to it - its far more common over there to be honest. They were those massive commercial ones too - about 2 of our regular ones per load!

But yes - for £500 rent I'd expect one too!!

but when you reach a certain point in life you don't want to have to use launderettes. You want to wash your clothe sin th ecomfort of your own home. No offence but I don't want to live like a student.

Dont want to sound snobbish but I am so that's how it comes out.

Wow.
Who would have though my random, off the cuff, washing machine example would have provoked so much comment :)

However, it has sparked the discussions and brought some interesting opinions to the fore.
For some families it seems, a washing machine is a necessity, or at least, works out significantly cheaper over the short to medium term, making it a worthwhile investment.
For others, it is perhaps less clear.
(For the record, yes, with a young family, I would borrow money if necessary to get a washing machine).

As to the points made about not having the time to go to the launderette, given that this thread is about debt, the question must be, is it worth getting into debt, in order to increase your leisure time?

Lets change the example to say - a dishwasher, which many people believe is a necessity.

Dishwasher - have one - it was built into the kitchen of the house that I (boo hiss) bought. It rarely gets used though - I'd say less than once a month on average.

By jove, I think you are right. We are making the same point. Who would have thought it :D

That was a generic "Duh", aimed at all those people who don't see debt as being debt.

Don't worry, you'll be in no doubt when I aim a "duh" at you.

I have no doubt in the near future you wil have cause to aim a duh at me! :D

We have a built in dishwasher that was there when we bought the house. My wife just uses it as an extra cupboard!

...a quick straw poll here shows that only my boss has about the same - and he's an Abercrombie & Fitch wearing, shopping-trip-to-Dubai taking sort...

I regularly take shopping trips to Dubai.
:cool::lol:

Due to it's negative environmental impact the built in dishwasher in our home doesn't get used, the maid does the washing up by hand.
