One that springs to my mind is Southern Comfort which was scored by Ry Cooder. Cooder also did Paris,Texas in a very similar vein but both captured the menace of the films.

The best ever - were it not for the existence of West Side Story. Although Cabaret is a much better film. But these don't really count as "soundtracks", do they? The Graduate deserves a mention.

Barry, Morricone, Yann Tiersen, even Jerry Goldsmith has his moments. But the daddy of them all is Bernard Herrmann - Psycho AND Taxi Driver? They found him dead slumped over the manuscript of the latter, apparently.
