Not Luton! Thank God
And you know this do you?

I work in the Public Sector and face the prospect of the dole along with my wife and I can guarantee you that we wont be leaving with massive payouts.

Going from 2 income to zero wont be a barrel of laughs either

Because I work in the public sector too. Most schemes in the public sector are one month per year of service, with anything under £30k tax free. Statutory is less than 2 weeks per year of service.

Why when a Tory minister utters the phrase 'Sustainable levels' do I see a period of unemployment coming my way in the building industry.

I heard it today and then that was followed up with a Brian Adams song on radio 2. Yes I`ve had beter days I must admit.

So much bollocks being spoken today, first about Rooney, then the spending review, then back to Rooney.

Prime example? The much-quoted: "Half a million public sectgor workers to lose their jobs, another half a million private sector jobs reliant on those public sector workers to go too."

What, 1 million people with bills to pay are going to PERMANENTLY be unemployed forever?

More likely that 700,000 of the 1 million will be absorbed into the private sector workforce over the next couple of years so the boost to tax revenues will offset additional welfare costs. But that doesn't sound sexy so won't make the papers.

My wife works in the Public Sector.

It appears that a lot of the job losses will be through a recruitment freeze, with thoses taking VR or retiring not being replaced.

I hope you are right, although i've seen little evidence that the private sector is poised to take up the challenge, at the rate our current Government expects.

In London village.
put in the context of whats been trailed or feared with 20-30% talked about. now 10% doesnt look so harsh, and in the rigth areas, ie cutting waste and nice to have projects, we may not even notice it.

prepare to be underwhelmed by the impact of the cuts when delivered.

Really ? Obviously not someone in use of social housing, education, social care, or other key services then ?

Lovely quote from a BBC summary of the spending review.

A pub regular called Amanda said: "Don't cut the benefits for the people who are really, really struggling. I don't think it's fair - we are struggling enough as it is.
"I live on £174 a fortnight and it's not fair."

BTW do not believe the statement about education not being touched.

B&H Authority have stopped all "specialist education support staff" from visiting schools due to cost measures and they are looking to close the specialist training centre in Moulsecoomb. The chances of your child receiving extra help at primary school is NIL! The issuing of Statementing children with SEN is an absolute JOKE!

So what you are left with is classes of 30 children, looked after by a teacher and a Teaching Assistant, where you could have children with severe psycological and physical problems, children with ADHD, vunerable children who are not being supported where before the schools could call upon specialist help and training!

And that is before the council releases school budgets and TA's, teachers, dinner ladies, support staff etc etc are all up for redundancy as there is no money left.

All because some farmer in the deep south of America defaulted on his mortgage!

fear not, a fair few people wont believe a jot that comes from the lips of Osborne.. if we are all in it together, why is his £4m trust fund in some offshore non UK tax paying haven eh?

Just far enough away from LDC
saying this as a labour voter and member and a huge fan of the NHS, I think ringfencing it whilst cutting welfare is just plain ludicrous. What we'll now get is an overloaded health care system that will end up picking up the pieces and issues in society that the rest of the welfare state cannot support.

So they'll get more, complex and resource consuming work for the same budget. Madness!!

Your signature is sheer genius. I wonder who we know who that applies to?

it was a prediction, half right half wrong. seems the numbers of directly effected job losses were in the ballpark. but did we see 40% cuts? 30%? why should social housing provide for better than those working?

The 490,000 public sector jobs to be cut over the next 4 years will be achieved by voluntary redundancies , retirements , no backfilling of vacant posts and elimination of "non jobs" created during Labour's reign. I was surprised there was no introduction of means testing for OAP bus passes , free TV licences for over 75s and the Winter Fuel Allowance so that pensioners on an income in excess of £50k a year wouldn't qualify. The Government have been bleating on about how difficult it is to means test Child Benefit but the answer is to scrap it and replace it with tax credits for the first 2 children up to the age of 16.

Thats because the government are more savvy than you, and know that the bureaucratic cost of means testing is more expensive than the savings it makes.

You can't add it to Tax credits as that would mean that those not working (and hence paying no tax) would have no way of receiving it.

With all the others it would cost so much to set up and administer the means testing that they would have to reduce the benefit, hence defeating the object.

There most probably will be some compulsory redundancies in the public sector but it probably won't make up the majority of job losses.

The Bullingdon Bullies have now got the liberal trators, Cleggo, Danny Boy and Saint Vince jumping through hoops as they ably assist in the smoke and mirrors dismantling of the welfare state.

The devil is of course in the detail but even at first glance it’s easy to see who is being horned. A half million people in the public sector will lose their jobs. The effect will be greatest on low and middle income families.

I doubt very much whether many of us have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future. The Con Dems are gambling on a near term private sector recovery kicking in making it alright on the night. Economic opinion is divided on this. It has become convenient to forget about the origins of the financial crisis and blame everything on a bloated state called into play by Labours socialist spending policies. It’s been a long time in waiting but the Thatcher Agenda has a sequel.

It can be added to tax credits because those who are not working would get food vouchers instead. Why would it cost too much to means test when income data is readily available on DWP and HMRC systems ?

yes, the devil is in the detail. like for instance the detail that its 490k jobs going, not 490k people losing thier jobs. a large percentage of those jobs are unfilled, another chunk where people are coming up for retirement or otherwise leaving and there are jobs that dont even exist yet other than in a budget plan. some of those made redundant will fill posts in other departments where thre is still a need. all said, there will not be 490k people directly out of work from these cuts.

its all too convenient to blame these spending cuts on a recession born of the financial crisis, the £109billion structrual debt is there purely from overspending of Labour - it is not the result of the financial situation, it is there because they budgeted to spend more than they received. after years of overspending supposedly fixing the countries ills, what the hell did they still need to carry on spending on? If this is supposed to be the product of a right wing agenda, many in that political school would say it doesnt go far enough and will say they bottled it.

Social housing was originally for everyone. Then Thatcher restricts it just to the poorest. Then wankers like you moan like that!

actually the Thatcher Agenda had a sequel already. It was called New Labour. This is the Thatcher Agenda part 3 - The End of the Welfare State.
