I think the biggest gate in Division 1 (old) was around 28,000.

I'd never have guessed the memory fades as you get older.

Was that BCFCs last time in Division 1 ?

The Rochdale match was the crowdiest I have been to of many 30,000+ crowds at the Goldstone. And it was not the away supporters that made it so.

Oldtimers (before me) recall a massive crowd against West Ham where more people got in than the attendance said. I do not know which match that was.

The biggest match in my time was a Chelsea came in the late 1960s when if the ground was big enough the crowd would have been about 60,000. Nearly 30,000 were at the 2nd Round cup tie against Aldershot.

Lots of people (new football supporters) were really put off by the chaos and crushes that occurred when crowds exceeded 30,000, notably against Bournemouth in 1971. This was the old Third Division.

I think the crowds and lack of parking put people off just as the recession hit when we made the top division. Crowds around the country were about 30% down on nowadays.
