Before my time. But just suppose, a club spent nearly a century getting to the old Division Two. A lo and behold a recently deceased footballer scored five in the first match and we lost 0-9. What was the score for the home match?

57 years actually. Hardly a century. Anyway, despite giving us a good hiding and scoring 15 goals against us, Middlesbrough still finished below us in the 1958/59 Division 2 table.

The crowds dipped after we reached Dibision 1 because :
We charged the highest prices in the country to stand on the terraces (£1.50!!!!!!)
Fences went up around the ground which put loads of people off and made the atmosphere much more threatening.
Hooligananism was rife amongst the bigger clubs - the Tottenham riot in 78 was pretty much a one-off in Divison 2 but in Divsion 1 mostl the clubs had major "firms"
We started dismally and kept it up.
Lots of people did not want to watch us lose week in week out after we had won week in week out for the last three years.......

But for the nostagia freaks amongst you, it was only 25 years ago.........

Gerry Ryan manages to keep possession despite this challenge by Willie Young, Arsenal's Scottish international defender.

It was the day Albion had waited for and fans had dreamed about since joining the Football League 59 years earlier.

The Seagulls' first match in the old First Division could not have been against more illustrious opponents.

Arsenal included in their ranks Pat Jennings in goal and players like Graham Rix and Liam Brady, who later went on to manage Albion. Also in the Gunners' line-up was Sammy Nelson, who two years later was to move to the Goldstone.

Bolstering the defence had been the priority of manager Alan Mullery during the summer, with the Newcastle match which clinched the club's place among the elite still fresh in the memory.

A then record fee of £250,000 brought John Gregory to the Goldstone from Aston Villa and £150,000 was shelled out to sign Steve Foster from Portsmouth.

An extension to seating on the west side of the ground, dubbed the 'Lego stand' cost £200,000 and increased the seating capacity by 1,000.

In the event the attendance was a rather disappointing 28,604 around 5,000 below the maximum, probably due to the hooligan threat associated with big clubs at the time.

Police were out in force and 33 arrests were made the night before the match, with a further 19 at the ground on the big day.

The match itself proved a let-down for Albion and emphasised that they were now up against the cream of the crop.

Gerry Ryan was foiled in the very first minute by Jennings, but Arsenal soon seized control with three goals in the first 12 minutes.

Brady made it 4-0 in the second half to inflict Albion's heaviest defeat in more than three years.

ALBION: Steele, Gregory, Williams, Horton, Rollings, Lawrenson, Ryan, Ward, Maybank, Sayer, O'Sullivan.
Sub: Poskett

ARSENAL: Jennings, Rice, Nelson, Talbot, O'Leary, Young, Brady, Sunderland, Stapleton, Price, Rix.
Sub: Hollins

8/10 for me. Remember Rochdale match being an evening ko, and queueing down Goldstone Lane for over an hour then hardly seeing a thing!

Crowds often seemed understated in the 80's - tannoy announcements were met with derision by the crowd.

Who remembers when you could buy alcohol in the ground? (at the north end of the West Stand in the car park).

those days in the late seventies and early eighties were indeed unforgetable times on the terraces.

one of the great shames of the modern game is the fact we will never experience the likes again. watching football is just not the same. i feel so lucky to have experienced that era as a kid, watching the great teams of the old first division come to the goldstone. seeing arsenal on that opening day was an incredable day. being in the north stand when they jumped out of the pen in the league cup, however, was not so good!!

what makes it even more sad is that the goldstone is no more.
what ever falmer is like it will NEVER be the goldstone, BUT it will be home.

you better be listening on monday MR PRESCOTT.
