its probably going to be CRAP but I love Alien flicks so going to see SKYLINE next week

I don't know if you've seen it yet and i don't intend to throw in spoilers at all, but by jingo i saw it today and it was an utter shitty ballbag of a film. Almost everything about it was wrong and pointless. I was friendlessly in the cinema, but i kept turning hoping that i wasn't completely alone in the anger it made me feel. I like to think no one enjoyed it, but it was dark in there.
It was an inhumane mockery of the V-Cloverfield-Matrix triumvirate and i never want that threesome adjoined again.
I thought it would have a few thrills and enjoyably toy with the idea of humans being farmed from Earth for whatever purpose, but such little imagination was put into it and such little blood splattered at all that it honestly left me fuming.
I love an Alien flick too too. Give me District 9 any day of the week over this twaddle.

Rendition
Thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal and Reece Witherspoon from a few years back about Witherspoon's husband getting arrested and tortured on suspicion of terrorist activity while she tries to find out where he is. There's loads more going on here, and it's a well made film which admirably manages to present an engaging view of the subject matter from all sides whilst avoiding too much melodrama (although I REALLY could have done without Witherspoon's pregnancy). The film falls down however, as the two lead actors play some of the most underdeveloped characters I have ever seen 'lead' a film. Gyllenhaal spends most of the time silently doing bugger all.

6/10 (but worth seeing)

Vicky Christina Barcelona

Pretty good modern Woody Allen, cast and scenery all look gorgeous but lacks the laughs or heart of his best stuff. Does feature Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson snogging though

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
5.9

I loved Oldboy, this is similiarly nasty, but pretty pointless and overdone without any moments of brilliance that Oldboy had. Wouln't bother with

Dead Snow
9
Nazi-zombies attacking young people on a ski-ing holiday. Really, really good horror, with genuinely funny and scary moments and great gore and death scenes

Still in Brighton
Down Terrace

I gave up on the England game as i was actually really looking forward to watching this on dvd, being Brighton based

Not funny, not engaging, crap acting, felt false and contrived all the way through. Watched it right through to the end out of courtesy but it was absolute rubbish, deserves only 2/10.

Went and saw Skyline with Mrs Oscar on Saturday without knowing anything about it other than it was something to do with aliens attacking the Earth.

So my review: It's about Aliens attacking the Earth. But you're pretty much safe from the invaders if you have a good set of Venecian blinds.

Appalling script, appalling acting and only the briefest moments of CGI fun.

3.5/10

Also, has anyone noticed how horrible Cineworld down the Marina has become?

It's always had its moments but it seems to have really been let go. Stinky carpets, sticky flaws, they hardly bother with any kind of effort in terms of presentation. And it's freezing in there.

I've complained but nothing appears to have been done.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1
I am a big fan of the harry potter books, and have enjoyed all the films (some more than others). Some of the latter have been accused of catering to fans of the books, and I've always thought that if you pay attention and remember what happened in earlier films, and apply some logic, you won't need to read the books.

However, this film I'm not sure I can convincingly argue that, at least not on first viewing. There seemed to be scenes where I had to stop and remember the book, but I think that was more to do with poor editing than with what they decided to cut from the book.

Having said that, and from my admittedly biased Harry Potter fan point of view I did really enjoy it. Yes, it definitely suffers from being only half the story, but it is still one of the stronger entries in the series. I really enjoy the style, and look Yates has brought to the films, giving them a grittier "real" feel. In the books, the magical world exists within our real world and, for me, the cartoonish feel of the first two films, and the artistic feel of the 3rd and fourth seemed to give the film a feeling of taking place in a fantasy dimension.

There is a lot of focus on the main trio, with the rest of the cast relegated to (at most) glorified cameos, and while they have improved, there are moments where they still aren't there (compare jim broadbent's monologue about the lily in Half-Blood Prince to rupert grint's monologue about the light in this one), but overall they do well enough.

As a fan, I really liked it.

I was down there today and they were definitely looking at the air conditioning/heating.

The American

Saw an advance screening of it last night at the Duke of York's. Beautifully shot (no surprise as it was directed by atmospheric music video specialist and the man behind the incredible Control, Anton Corbijn), a great lead from George Clooney, and a intiguing storyline, without it actually being that thrilling.

The only qualm I has with it is that it cut to the chase in the last fifteen minutes and ended somewhat abruptly.

I saw Harry Potter today. What bunkum. For fans of the children's book, it might thoroughly please, but for those that never had a taste for it, me i mean, it was generally quite poor. Only Grint puts in a reasonable performance, as ever, Radcliffe and the sour-faced toff girl being completely boring and without an ounce of charm. Two and a bit hours of 3 goons basically telling me what is happening in slowly, partly solving the mystery of where that snakeman's soulbits are hidden.

The worst thing about it all for me is that the magic is free. It costs nothing and you have to do virtually nothing to earn the right to use it. The wizards and witches never look worn or crippled by its excessive use and fling themselves around the world at any second. There should be a damaging effect. It should eat something up. Take something away. Like all power does. Some might say it has robbed these teens of their innocence, and maybe that is the case, but in this film they seem childish and undeveloped and completely bereft of raw or relevant emotion. A few stubbly hairs doth not a man make.

Some viewers walked out with the unexcitement of it. I sat through to the end and left without any sense of eagerness for part two.

Skyline
The first 75 minutes were boring. I mean, the film wasn't so much bad as it was dull, and dragged (I was looking at my watch after less than 30mins). The characters were poorly developed giving you nothing to connect with them or care about the, meaning whatever they go through you just don't care. Then for the last 15-20 minutes the film goes from dull to ridiculous.

God I saw Skyline a few days back. Has to be one of the worst films of the year. As others have said, very dull for the most part, with ridiculous plot threads, especially a half-baked subplot with one of the main characters sort of getting superpowers when it suits the story - though this does lead to one of the most unintentionally hilarious and completely shit scenes ever as you see him beating the crap out of an alien. Then, THAT ending. Oh my God. Thoroughly one of the most ill advised, poorly handled and utterly stupid endings I have ever seen. I'd think the directors were (not so) subtly taking the piss out of the audience if I thought that any pair who had the gall to label themselves 'The Brothers Strause' had the capacity for anything beyond mind numbing tedium.

Oh and also, watching Donald Faison (ie Turk from Scrubs) attempt to act, furthermore as someone other than Turk from Scrubs, is almost painful to watch.

Donald Faison was ok in Remember the titans, but I think that was before scrubs.

Apparently, there's going to be at least one sequel to skyline. And the brothers strause financed the film themselves because the studios wouldn't, so it's not like a studio will say "this one bombed, let's not make another", and we get to avoid it.

Saw this last night with Mrs TRHK and loved it. Was completely expecting a girlie fingerfest on the back of Clooney getting his short off every five minutes (which he does) but despite expectations thought it was great. Reflective, dark, sad, charming. As Clooney gets older he gets better at acting. There is a lot of silence in this film and Clooney does a brilliant job of carrying it. Masses of subtle artiness if that's your thing - and metaphors about. The openning credits set the scene with an hypnotic drive down a straight tunnel - nothing but the light at the end and orange lights flashing past - captivating. Some amusing little references to American just scattered through the film purely for the amusement of those who notice. Highly recommended. Worth seeing at the cinema. 8/10
