Sunderland 1981. Two games left of the season, and the Albion in the bottom 3, Sunderland are two points and two places above us, so it's a crucial game.

The Sunderland police are at Seaburn station to escort us to the ground, and.......15 Albion fans get off the train. So they stick us in the back of two police vans and drive us to Roker Park. The police are staggered that so few can be arsed to attend, but are a good laugh and wish us well as we get out of the van to run the Sunderland fans out of town.

We win in the 90th minute, with Gary Williams ghosting in to hammer one from 20 yards, and the barmy army of 48 Seasulls fans go mental in front of 20,000 depressed Wearsiders.

The police drive us back to the station, and we go home happy and dazed (and in one piece)

The police escort after the game was 100% necessary. The mackems were not happy.

Rochdale is always a good day out, know some lads up there from England games so good to catch up. Also the Sam Smiths pub near the station is still under £1.50 a pint.
The Cemetery Inn on Bury Road is a magnificent pub and it does exist.

There are Fat Cats in Sheffield, Ipswich, Colchester and Norwich. They are not a chain but are all run by members of the same family I believe.

Is it the Maltings by York Station?

Remember it having a lethal variety of cider, not a good plan at 11am to be drinking some 10% apple based concoction...

Not sure but can vaguely remember the route to the pub. i also remember Halifax fans at York station - odd things I remeber from drunken away days as I cannot remember who scored for us that day - perhaps I go for the wrong reasons

Anyway the pub -
Turn left out of the station and head up a hill and round a sharp left hand corner, I think. Last time we went there were 2 bars full of brighton at 11.30am and we watched Chelsea v Manu in a 3-3 draw. Then stood on a terrace in the sunshine, won 1.0 and had a drink in the Bootham near the ground until out train at about 8

When we got off the train, some copper said to me...." is this it?"

I said "yes" and he walked away laughing

Wycombe away with the megaphone and the police, pure genius
the coppers looking for the megaphone in vein, and every now and then someone would scream into it, the police would pile in after it, by which time, it had been passed on and someone else would shout into it, and the police would go after it again - MAGIC

also Forest away when we lost 3-2 infront a full house, and the mexican wave went round, when it got to our bit, a huge chorus of "Coooowees" as we waved

Both great days. :lolol: :lolol:

Right on the money.

We always take loads up there and never seem to lose. The game on the Saturday that all but promoted us, when Zamora made his return from injury was one of my top 3 away days ever.

Though I hate Peterboro - even the idea of the chav infested hell hole - that day was fuckin brilliant. I had just got back from 3 months in India and was the only BHA fan with a sun tan. As I remember we started out in some biker pub near the station and the rest is a blur until I got in the away end......

Best days out for me? Used to love Sunderland and Newcastle a few years back as it was always when we set a tinny pyramid record on the way home. Darlington is a cracking day out as is Torquay and the pubs and food in the ground at Kidderminster were top quality too. Nearer to home I've been to Upton Park 5 times so there must be something about pub-less East end plague pits I find attractive.
