As this started as a history thread it's interesting to hear history from the other viewpoint. Recently in Quito I was reading a guide book that was mentioning Islas Platas [Silver Isles] off the Ecuadorian coast. It went on to say that the famous British pirate, Francis Drake raided the Spanish galleons as was rumoured to bury his stolen treasure on this island.

They're not wrong, Drake was a very naughty boy. He had a license from Good Queen Bess to attack Spanish ships (legalised piracy), he also did a bit of the un-official raiding as well ..... bit dodgy was old Drake.
