It was a goal but it doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the game really.
If he was holding his head and the officials noticed this shouldn't the game have been stopped as he had a head injury? As he was off the pitch he could be treated there without stopping the game but then it seems odd that he could be playing someone onside

I would have had a lot more sympathy for that point of view had Panucci actually been injured; as it was he was (I believe) up and ready for the kick off. It looked more like a cynical attempt not to interfere with his teams offside trap by coming back onto the pitch, or attempt to get the referee to stop the game.

That could be the case but on the replay, he goes down straight away with his back to play. It's insanely quick thinking if that's the case

The quote from the President of the Italian Referee's Association, explains it:-

"il senso della regola è evitare che un giocatore si approfitti della sua uscita in campo per mettere in fuorigioco un avversario".

"The point of the rule is to avoid a player profiting by leaving the field to put an opponent offside".

Did you know you are meant to get booked if you leave the field of play without permission :)

They shouldn't stop game cos he's off the pitch and no he's not affecting the offside when he's off the pitch. Similar thing at Crewe vs Albion a few yrs ago - everyone tried to attack the lino :)

Jibrovia
Clive Tydsley would have been too bust reading his pre-prepared lines and David Pleat is senile.

All David Pleat mentioned last night was Dirk Kuyt. Either he was on a tenner for each time he said the name or he has a boner for Liverpools clogger
