How am I being ignorant?
By pointing out that those people who have a dislike for all things native Irish, Catholic, non English or whatever are stupid because they use a RC Saint as some kind of representation of their own nation or patriotic views?
Wouldn't it make more sense to find a Saint more appropriate and in tune with the nation to represent them as their patron saint?
You said yourself that you didn't know if the RC church supported the IRA. That's how you are being ignorant because you seem to think that singing about "no surrender to the IRA" is somehow equated with "no surrender to the RC church".
Yes, the song's just silly. Yes it would be lovely to have a British saint. Perhaps like the Welshman, Saint Patrick but it ain't gonna happen. St George represents England. It's iconoclastic and is so engrained in English culture that nothing will change now. It's our flag, for Christ sake. He does us English fine, thanks.
