Durham CCC v sussex ccc day three

Play started on time at sunny Riverside this morning with Stephen Harmison starting the day's proceedings from the Finchale End and Callum Thorp bowling from the Lumley End.

Michael Di Venuto had stressed how important this first session was to the side in his post match interview yesterday and by the third over Durham had claimed their first wicket of the day, when Thorp bowled Murray Goodwin for 3, leaving Sussex 131-2.

Thorp struck again bowling Hopkinson for 14 and the returning Ed Joyce, who had retired hurt yesterday, added four to his total before he was caught by Mustard off the bowling of Mark Davies for 36.

Luke Wright returned to the pavilion without scoring after he was caught by Mark Stoneman, giving Thorp his third wicket of the session.

Sussex were 181-6 after Hodd (4) was caught at point by Will Smith off Liam Plunkett's second ball of the day. The opposition pass the 200 mark but Plunkett picks up another wicket in his fourth over of the morning when Yasir Arafat is caught at slip by Di Venuto for 10.

Yardy is run out on 97 courtesy of a direct hit from Dale Benkenstein in the last over before lunch leaving Sussex 205-8 at the break.

Callum Thorp picks up his fifth wicket (5-82 off 24.4 overs) when Corey Collymore is caught at slip by Muchall on 11. Sussex were all out for 245 after Muchall picked up his second catch, this time off Harmison, sending Rayner back to the dressing room having contributed 24.

The follow on was enforced with Yardy and Nash opening for Sussex, and Mark Davies opening the bowling at the Lumley End and Stephen Harmison taking the ball at the Finchale End.

Plunkett takes over at the Finchale End, bringing Harmison's four over spell to an end. Davies goes on to claim the first wicket of the second innings after Yardy is caught at slip by Muchall for 10 off the first ball of the eighth over.

Ian Blackwell comes on to bowl the 18th over from the Finchale End and bowld Ed Joyce (14) with his fourth ball, leaving Sussex 71-2.

At tea the visitors were 80-2.

Nash brought up his fifty, which included 11 fours, in the third over after tea having faced 68 balls. Mustard and Thorp combined twice tin consecutive overs to send Nash (55) and Goodwin (13) back to the pavilion with Sussex having lost four wickets for 104 runs.

Sussex were 115-5 after Hopkinson (7) was trapped lbw off Davies' first over as he returned at the Lumley End in the 35th over. Wright and Hodd reached their fifty partnership, off 68 balls, in the 46th over with Wright contributing 34 and Hodd 9. Wright's fifty was from 58 balls and included 11 fours, at which point Sussex were 181-5.

At the close of play Sussex were 208-5.

Well at least they can get a head start on the long journey home, the next two C'ship games are big.

Notts at Horsham and then Worcestershire at home, need a win and a draw with bonus points from these. Then it could come down to the two games home and away against Yorkshire.

BBC SPORT | Cricket | Lancashire capitulate in bowl-out

There is some shocking deliverys from top flight bowlers. Not quite the excitement of a football penalty shoot out.

Watching that begs the question of why not have an indoor knock aroud, best 5 players a side, would be far more exiting and feel like as a team you have more influence. Old playing ground rules applie, one hand one bounce, break a window or lost ball your out, unlimited running if it gets stuck in a net and takes time to recover.

Luke Wright still there with a century now, including a couple of recent 6's. Must be opening up now that he's left with the tail-enders. To be honest that's how he plays best.

Terrific inning that for Luke although it will end up being for nothing.

thats 2 centuries in his last 2 CC games. Maybe he is learning to be more patient with his shot selection

Not much chance of winning this. Will have to bowl Durhan out for their lowest score EVER
