Hello, I'm looking to get a DSLR. I've been toying with the idea for about a year now but I'm not sure exactly what to get. Here's my criteria:

I don't mind spending upto 600 quid, but no more. including a lens

I 'll want to use it for a bit of everything (landscape photos, gigs etc)

I want to start taking some HDR photos too so not sure if there's a particular camera that's good for that.

Been told that the EOS- 400D is a good one, but any further suggestions on this and types of lenses etc??

Thanks!

If it was me I'd ask Roz.

I'd recommend the Nikon D80 and I see that my assistant has already done just that on my behalf! But I know several people who've chosen the D80 as their first digital SLR and all of them have been pleased with the camera. I'd also recommend going to a proper camera shop and asking to see (and get your hands on) a range of digital SLRs in your price range. There's absolutely no obligation to actually BUY one (unless the price can't be beaten by going elsewhere on the internet) but since there's rarely much to choose between the spec at this level, the really important thing is that the camera feels right.

I'm a Canon man, so I'd go for either the 400D (should be coming down in price now that the 450D is out) the 450D, or the new 1000D.

HDR files are produced after you capture the images, so any good DSLR will produce excellent results.

Canon has the lions share of the market so the choice is wider from them.

The choice is massive now though, and you don't just have to stick with canon and Nikon.

Excellent models are available from Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Panasonic and Fuji.

Minefield eh!!

Can't go wrong really with that as your budget.

Personally, I'd buy the best lens you can afford, as that will make more of a difference than the actual SLR body.

Canon make cheaper cameras than Nikon and have worked very hard on capturing the "enthusiast" SLR market. So I'd certainly suggest getting your hands on one. You may well discover, however, that the reason for the price differential has a deal to do with the durability of the camera. Although that may not matter much.

Personally i'm a canon man the place too look and compare is http://www.dpreview.com/

With cameras nothing like getting yourself down the camera shop and trying a few in your hand see which one fits you best its like many things has to feel part of you or it won't work for you.

Both the D80 and the 400D are good entry level digital cameras,

Does 'entry level' mean that I can use them for amateur porn shots?
