According to the laws of the game referees have until the game restarts to cancel any goal given in error.

I can see there needing to be an area to allow the ref to correct any mistakes, and perhaps it's easy to say the ref should check before actually awarding the goal, and without video replay what changes between deciding to award a goal and kick off, but what about the instances where he instinctively awards what initially appears to be a legitimate goal, and then his attention is brought to something by the lino or fourth official?

By all accounts the game restarted after the ref realised his mistake and awarded the goal (including our manager in the interview, who said we just have to get on with it).

I hope Sky Sports have some decent footage tonight!

Why did he blow the whistle? To signal the goal? Why did he refer to the linesman?

Hard to say, it appears he blew the whistle for offside without consulting the linesman, then went to consult him after the ball had gone in! Then gave the goal after the consultation, despite having previously blown his whistle!?

Was he the ref in our BMuff game or the lino?

Sheldrake was the referee/clown in the Bournemouth game who:
- didn’t do anything about Symes breaking Ankergren’s nose, despite looking directly at it (But he can have the benefit of the doubt here as it was subtle from Symes leaving his foot in).
- didn’t send off Symes for elbowing Elphick, despite looking directly at the incident. Clear elbow, definite red.
- gave the freekick to Bournemouth in the 90th minute as he again had a great view of the incident but then decided to consult Lino Farries, who was not up with play but decided it should be a penalty. Farries was back at Withdean recently for the Pompey game.

So... The ref disallowed the goal initially, then consulted the linesman and allowed it, then consulted the fourth official and re-disallowed it?

Can the 4th official overrule the referee's decision even if it is incorrect after the game has restarted from the centre spot ?

I hope he's struck off - clearly not up to it. He's cost Col U and us points now. ****

No. He can't overrule, but he can assist. The referee's decision is final - however and by whatever route he chose to make it.

Whether he can call the referee over for something he believes he has seen, I don't know.
Whether he can have the moral authority to tell the referee what the ref did (whether imagined or real), I don't know.

And boy did Farries get some stick from the South Stand in the Pompey match!!

Can the 4th official overrule the referee's decision even if it is incorrect after the game has restarted from the centre spot ?

These are the duties of the fourth official:
• A fourth official may be appointed under the competition rules and
officiates if any of the three match offi cials is unable to continue, unless a
reserve assistant referee is appointed. He assists the referee at all times
• Prior to the start of the competition, the organiser states clearly whether,
if the referee is unable to continue, the fourth official takes over as the
referee or whether the senior assistant referee takes over as referee with
the fourth official becoming an assistant referee
• The fourth official assists with any administrative duties before, during and
after the match, as required by the referee
• He is responsible for assisting with substitution procedures during the
match
• He has the authority to check the equipment of substitutes before they
enter the field of play. If their equipment does not comply with the Laws of
the Game, he informs the referee
• He supervises the replacement balls, where required. If the match ball has
to be replaced during a match, he provides another ball, on the instruction
of the referee, thus keeping the delay to a minimum
• He assists the referee to control the match in accordance with the Laws
of the Game. The referee, however, retains the authority to decide on all
points connected with play.
• After the match, the fourth official must submit a report to the appropriate
authorities on any misconduct or other incident that occurred out of the
view of the referee and the assistant referees. The fourth official must
advise the referee and his assistants of any report being made
• He has the authority to inform the referee of irresponsible behaviour by any
occupant of the technical area
• A reserve assistant referee may also be appointed under competition rules.
His only duty shall be to replace an assistant referee who is unable to
continue or to replace the fourth official, as required

They are usually all mic-ed up to each other, but if not, or if the equipment is failing, I imagine he can call the ref over to discuss something that helps the ref to control the match in accordance with the laws of the game.

By the seaside in West Somerset
the beeb report makes no mention of the game having restarted before the goal was disallowed. If it had then the ref and the 4th official would be at risk of being suspended from the list as it is in clear contravention of the rules and if I were Colchester I would be pushing for the game to be replayed

Had the game re-started? had Charlton kicked off?

if the answer is Yes to both, then the ref cannot change the decision under Law 5

Decisions of the referee
The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including
whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are fi nal.
The referee may only change a decision on realising that it is incorrect or, at his
discretion, on the advice of an assistant referee or the fourth offi cial, provided
that he has not restarted play
or terminated the match.

So, if it HAD restarted, the goal MUST still stand, and the game finished 1-1, which suits us much better. Come on Colchester, don't take this lying down.
