The Benteke goal at the Amex was the classic sucker punch and a well-taken finish. As much as it hurts, you sometimes have to take those on the chin.

Maupay's goal however, was a completely avoidable car-crash for Palace, entirely of their own making.

1. Keeper feigns injury in the 94th minute and wins a free-kick in lieu of a throw-in to them. Bet he was pleased with himself.
2. All the keeper has to do is put his laces through it and the ref will blow for time.
3. Keepers duffs his free-kick straight to Veltman, who is completely unchallenged by a watching Zaha.
4. Already at this point some Palace fans sense a whiff of danger as Veltman plays the ball forward.
5. The Palace defence have switched off, are caught square and the keeper is stranded and back-peddling furiously.

The fact Palace gifted us this goal and were the architects of their own 90+5 downfall makes it so, so much sweeter.

Most goals are avoidable if the defence or keeper does its job properly, very few are unstoppable due to technical brilliance.

We made that goal by

a)passing the ball forward quickly and accurately
b)having a player ready to run forward to take it

we forced the mistake...

the fact that it was 95th minute helped as any other time of the game the ball from Veltman goes sideways or back

I agree with you to an extent, but at the elite professional level there were a whole catalogue of pretty much unforced errors that all came together in about 10 seconds to create a perfect storm for Palace.

- The keeper's deception to get a free kick instead of accepting the throw
- His completely duffed kick whilst under zero pressure. 99 times out of 100 he'd launch that straight into no-man's land and it's game over
- Zaha just standing there and watching Veltman win the ball.
- The defenders standing square on and not alert to any possibility of the ball being returned
- The keeper being on the edge of his box utterly stranded.

I'm not sure we 'forced' any of these errors but we were certainly in a better position to capitalise on them when they occurred.

Knowing how easily aggravated he is Zaha is probably even now haunted by Maupay. Many professional sports people talk about how a defeat or injustice lingers for a long time while a victory is moved on from fast. The fact it was against us and so late in the game there was no chance for any kind of retribution will only add to the underlying sense of anger and disbelief that will constantly creep up on him. I expect we'll see a reaction when they play Leicester at the weekend and he tries to get it out of his system, and he'll either have a man of the match performance or a red card.

Just watching it again. Duffy has just had a header saved from Gross free kick. 5 minutes added time just gone up on the board. Surely we’ve left it too late this time. Palace will be gutted if they let it slip now.

4 minutes left and Palace have a corner.

No rush to take it.

Benteke kicks it out for a throw.

Palace keeper has the ball. 150 seconds left

Commentators saying how brilliant Palace have defended.

Guaita injured. Free kick to Palace. Guaita takes free kick.

It falls to Veltman in our half. 40 seconds to go.

Then what happens?

Indeed no penalty. They are just running and there is a touch. As I said, would have been harsh and if that was on the opposite end, you would have agreed.

IMO, if it had been given it wouldn't have been over turned. Suspect they've all missed the initial touch from the Palace player that alters the trajectory of Welbeck's foot, ultimately causing Welbeck to trip himself and thus affecting the shooting opportunity. 50-50, understandable why it wasn't given, but if it had been given that would also have been understandable. Seen pens given for a lot less in the past.

I’ve spoken to a neutral who is also an ex pro footballer. He says it’s a penalty.

Yep defensively we were all at sea when it came to Benteke's late late winner.

Another difference is that we did largely outplay Palace in that game and DID deserve the victory. At Smellhurst on Monday night, although Palace possibly just edged the game, it wasn't nearly so clear cut.

Yep -and that reflects the fact that our errors leading to that goal were because we were going for a win still . On Monday, Palace had the win, what they wanted, in their grasp.. their errors were in a team that had been trying to see the game out! : both avoidable but one smacks of being naïve, the other is well just sh#t!!

Everything they did was commentated as being brilliant, even in the 2nd half.

CPalace 2nd half stats:

Goal attempts: 1 (infamous miss)

On Target: 0

Possession: 35%
(Brighton 65%)

Robbed by lucky Brighton!
