I heard 2 figures at the weekend that left me feeling down.

The Ricoh stadium cost £110m, nearly twice what Falmer is estimated to cost. It's the first time I have really felt how limited in ambition Falmer is going to leave us.

Secondly, it's left City £60m in debt. That's got to be a worry for anyone.

Sure it is but lets' face it, we'd be far more lacking in ambition if we stayed at Withdean. If you want to make omlettes etc.

And the fact that they are going to need 22K attendances for home matches to break even.

I can't help thinking a 23,000 capacity is going to look PONY in 5 years time either but a) we don't want a £60m debt hanging round the clubs kneck and b) I'll take a 23,000 state-of-the-art job over the crock of cack that is Withdean any day...

Id rather have a 23,000 capacity ground PACKED to the rafters rather than a huge ground that's half/ two thirds full every other week.

Why is Falmer limited in ambition just because it's going to cost half of coventry's stadium? If point two is correct, that they are now 60million in debt, then it's an ambition I don't want to see at the albion.

I know 22k is a little on the small side, but I'm pretty sure that even if we'd applied for a 30 or35k stadium it wouldn't have cost 110million. I think Coventry have been extravegant rather than ambitious.

Not knocking it but it wont be state of the art by the time its built plans are nearly 8years old now .. but its will still be light years ahead of withdean .. Like you i think 23k is a tad small but at least we will fill it and hopefully creat an atmosphere

The Coventry stadium also includes a concert arena and a casino, which may explain it's added cost.

Maybe so but it'll also add to their income. Maybe Falmer should have a lap dancing club attached. The NIMBYs would go mental !

Presumably that's 22k while in the Championship? Aren't gate receipts far less important than ever before because of TV money and stuff?

When I spoke to Dick Knight at the Xmas dinner a few seasons ago he said the Stadium capacity could easily be increased. If you look at the design the slanting roof can be raised and all 4 corner can be filled with seats. I reckon it could eventually be nearer the 28,000 mark.

Obviously they would have to go through extra planning to do this which could prove a nightmare again, but at least we'll have a stadium. There is no way we would get 23,000 week in week out unless we were in the playoffs or higher. In the Premier league this club would fill a 28,000 seater stadium no problem we have the floating fan base to do it.

A few facts:

The stadium didn't cost Cov a penny. It was a combination of funds from the Coventry Council, Advantage West Midlands (government money), and the Alan Higgs Charity.

The stadium is rented from the owners at a cost of £1m per year.

The football club only receive income from matchday activity and have a budgeted break-even figure of around £22k. I believe Cov could struggle to achieve this unless Mickey performs another minor miracle.

Cov were £60m in debt just after relegation, but I understand they have got that down to around £20m.

I have been around the stadium and the facilities are superb for a "sterile" new stadium.....when it's finished!

If we'd applied for a 30,000+ stadium, it would be far more unlikely we'd get it!

However, as has already been stated, once Falmer is built, the capacity can be increased.

There is no ambition lacking in Falmer, we're just being a bit more discrete about it!

Coventry's new stadium will eventually hold 32,000.

The capacity was limited to 23,000 at the weekend because it's not finished.

They got the 23,000, so looks like they will comfortably hit the break even figure. Crowds typically rise significantly with a decent stadium- Leicester used to get 18,000 or so, now its usually closer to 26,000 each game, likewise Reading got growds of 4-6000 at Elm Park, but now hit 14,000+, depending on the game.

Shame really, as Coventry are a rubbish club.

And Hull exist comfortably with a 24,000 stadium, so I'm sure 22k will do us for starters. Let's get there first before people start complaining it's not ambitious enough!

dunno why but I've always been under the impression that Falmers capacity will not be increased at any point. It may of come up at one of the 10,000,000 inquirys we've had, something to do with Falmer being a "stop-gap" until a much better area opens up for a bigger stadium ??? that last bit might've been a rumour, I'll do some digging on the Capacity thing.

Added to that is you total up all league attendances it come out at around 11,000 to 12,000 I think. The Gillingham and Withdean days have of course dented this massively but if you compare us to say Reading zzzzzz.... you will see how much more history and support we have compare to them. We really are a club (with a new ground and historically) which is the same size as Palace, Charlton and Pompey its just that alot of our supporters now are just too young to remember and new ones who started when we got succesful again recently.

With a new stadium players and managers will be gagging to come to Brighton a fantastic town with massive support.:clap2:
