Here's another to mull over.

You have a set of balancing scales and 8 balls. 1 of the balls is heavier than the other 7.

What is in MINIMUM number of weighs required to guarantee you know which the heaviest ball is.

That's it. The ice cubes were still solid when our man drank the punch. They subsequently melted poisoning everyone else.

Thanks to Eric Potts for giving me the clue.

Would it be one? If you have one weight in one scale and then place each ball in the other scale separately one at a time, would that tell you the heaviest ball?

3 is the obvious answer...

Assume balls numbered 1 to 8 and, say, 6 is the heaviest.

weigh 1, 2, 3 and 4 against 5, 6, 7, 8. Discard 1-4

Weigh 5 and 6 against 7 and 8. Discard 7 and 8.

Weigh 5 against 6 and discover 6 is the heaviest.

But as 3 is the obvious answer I assume there is a cunning answer of 2.

No. Each time you replace a ball it counts as a weigh, so could require up to 7 tests.

It is possible to do it in 2 though.

None because you can tell 'by feel' which is the heaviest when you pick them up?

It is a bit lost on me this, not good at thinking logically when figures are involved.

In my computer
4 balls in one 4 balls in the other, discard the lightest lot, 2 balls in each, discard the lightest again, 1 ball in each discard the lightest...

3 weighs?
