Club shop complaint

Cereal Killer said:
If i wasnt already working on a Sunday, I would work there.

They have a couple of empty shops in Churchill Square on the bottom floor near Game (Swaznegger(sp) and the bigger one next to Debenhams)

Surely it would bring more custom (which means more money) if it was there rather than Church Road and more space for stuff.

Yes rent would be high BUT more buisness will compensate for that.

I suspect theyare empty for the vey understandable reason that no one can make any money out of them...............

Personally I blame McGhoo

So are the people that work in pubs and restaurants, and the rest of the leisure industry, yet they are expected to be there all day and all night. I don't get double time for working 12 hour shifts on a sunday. This office is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, because if it wasn't people would complain that they couldn't get the service they needed.

It's very simple, if you don't like the hours and the money get another job. Someone will be prepared to do yours. No one is forcing people to work these hours.

You miss the point Kylie. Your job and the other essential services need to be available 24/7/52. What you are saying is, that if I can work these unsociable hours then I want every other bugger to work them too. It seems that you are not happy with your work, and maybe you should be looking for other work.

We can all find time to shop six days a week, it is not essential for shops to be open 24/7/52. There's no getting away from this fact. Dress it up as you like and bring in all the distractions of agument, but what I and others say is fact.

So as I work shifts, and can't always get to the shops during the day or on a Saturday I'm penalised because these shops aren't considered essential. Neither are pubs, restaurants, casinos, cinemas etc yet they are allowed to open all day Sunday and all night.

The FACT here is that there is no real reason why shops shouldn't be allowed to open longer on a Sunday. If the businesses themselves didn't think opening would bring more money in they wouldn't open.

I see no reason why any shop should not be allowed to open 24/7/52, so long as the owner is staffing it.

By paying staff wages then the owner would be staffing the shop. That's the point.

To answer your earlier edit, I'm perfectly happy with my job, and working shifts doesn't bother me in the slightest. I just feel that the current retail restrictions are pointless. I can't see any good reason for them to exist.

Going back to the original topic. I do think it's possible that the club shop is missing a trick by not opening on a Sunday, especially as the town is so busy during the summer. However I assume that they have considered the amount of money they could likely take, and the cost of opening and decided that it isn't worth it. Fair enough. Like I have said already, they don't HAVE to open. My argument is with the Government restricting shops and telling them they CAN'T open.

Then I suggest that you read through some of the contributions to this thread, and try to understand the points of view from some of the victims of Sunday trading. (with compassion of course)

I do understand that the shops would want existing employees to work the extra hours they open, but as I have said, no one will force them to. There will always be someone that will be willing to work. The shops would not be allowed to dismiss on the grounds that current employees are not willing to work the extra hours. They may well build it into future contracts but people interviewing for those jobs will be made well aware.

But that doesn't make it right. People working in the service sector should be paid more money if customers expect round the clock service. Just coz people are willing doesn't make it right.

Sorry to interject Les, but I have to point out you haven't completed your signature. You have left off,

Am I the only one on here tonight who's pissed? It's a poetic play on words Les. Your signature reads, "I ain't got time to breed."

What's the pleasurable part of breeding? FFS!

Thay don't HAVE to work in shops. There are other job opportunities available. Why should we live in a place with a 1950's attitude to services?
Not if you live in Grimsby. The "other" job opportunities here, whether or not you have qualifications and/or experience are in factories which process fish or ready meals. I have just managed to get a part time job in Asda as they seem to respect someone in their forties who has previously been with another large company for over 22 years.

Is there ANYTHING that you personally don't do on a Sunday BECAUSE IT'S A SUNDAY?

Why should working be any different?

Yeah. I don't draw little boxes after I write 'ANYTHING'. Definitely don't do that on Sundays.

Response from the shop: This question has been answered many times before.... basically a) during the football season some of the staff work a 6 day week when there is a saturday game, they do deserve to have a day off b) we have tried sunday opening before. Although the town centre may be extremely busy at present on a Sunday, the vast majority are daytrippers who have no real interest in Brighton & Hove Albion. As a rule, locals tend to stay away from the centre of Brighton when its busy c) and most importantly, unlike many other small outlets of our size in the town centre, ALL of our products are available to purchase online from the comfort of your own home, and the large number of orders we receive every Monday morning indicates that fans are happy to shop with us by this means.
From the horses mouth. You can't argue with that, if profit margin is much smaller on a sunday then why bother, that's all I wanted to know. It just means that they'll have to wait a while to take my cash.
I still dispute the excuse about giving staff a day off though, just employ someone who wants to work on a sunday.

Then you have the cost of training, paying managers wages for a Sunday, etc....
