OK, a few things to chuck into the pot ...

1 Genesis isn't a scientific document - it's a word picture of creation more concerned with who was behind it than how it was done.

Aren't the miracles, the resurrection and the ascent to heaven all "word pictures", or is it just the parts that have been disproved?

Well, some liberal thinkers would take that view.

But if you believe God is all powerful and created the world, miracles, resurrection and ascension are no big deal

One of the best known books about the Resurrection, called Who Moved The Stone? was written by Frank Morison, a journalist and sceptic who set out to prove that it was a myth. His research and studies ended up convincing him it was true. Well worth reading with an open mind.
