Interesting & surprised to see my little thread had gone on to 3 pages. Looking at those stats of div 1 crowds above, there certainly was a dip in crowds despite football being much cheaper. the game was more 'shabby' then with poor grounds & hoolies.

just a little point on Albion's poor away support. Going in the 'away' end was often bad for your health and I soon learned, like many others, that the away end was not only the worse part of the ground but also somewhere frequently housing home thugs.

Besides, not knowing how long the dream would last, I took the chance to stand at such famous places as the Kop & Stretford End.

As a whole (total number visiting every match in all 4 divisions) the worst season for attendances was 1985-86. However, looking at each division individually brings in some anomalies, the old First Division reached its lowest as late as 1988-89, the old Second Division had its worst year in 1985-86, the old Third Division in 1986-87 and the old Fourth Division in 1984-85.

Average attendance during 1988-89 season (League position in brackets)

1. Liverpool (2) 38,574
2. Man Utd (11) 36,488
3. Arsenal (1) 35,595
4. Everton (8) 27,765
5. Spurs (6) 24,467
6. Aston Villa (17) 23,310
7. Newcastle (20) 22, 921

9. West Ham (19) 20,738
10. Sheffield W (15) 20,037
11. Middlesbrough (18) 19,999
12. Derby (5) 17,536

I notice that Coventry's attendence hasn't changed much over the years.

Coventry have always been one of the lesser supported teams in the Midlands. With the exception of Walsall.

Yep most of us who followed the club away in the 1980s/early90s did the same. So when you read that there were only 50 Albion fans at Hillsborough/Elland Rd/Roker etc just take it as an inaccuracy.

PS Isn't it about time that all these London football fans, like Dandyman, took their arguments off a BHAFC site.
