CC1, Nottinghamshire v Sussex at Nottingham, Sep 12-15, 2011

no i want lancashire to beat somerset as that will force warwickshire to go for a win against hampshire, rather that settling for draw

To be fair we ARE trying to beat Hampshire, it's just that Carberry and McKenzie have seemingly batted very well so far today. I thought we were clear favourites at the start of the day, but much like in the Lancs game, one or two players having a good day for the opposition has put the result in the balance.

I think our (Warks) game will peter out into a draw, I can't see how it'd end with a result now (short of a very VERY generous declaration by Hampshire, and even then we only specialise in go-slow batting), which means that the desination of the Championship lies in Lancashire (and Somerset's) hands. Somerset's tail have done fantastically but it's now down to how well they bowl; Kartik will be key.

edit: my last point is even more true now. Hussain has been run out for 0. Egit. Lancashire need 211 in two and a half hours of play.

Somerset all out - Lancashire need 211 to win

GM Hussain run out 0 (10m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Fall of wicket: 310/10 (106.4 ov);

Assumoing Lancashire score at a similar rate in their second innings, they should achieve the target in around 55 or so overs - about 3 hrs 45 minutes playing time - they should have enough time and overs to get the runs providing they keep the scoring rate quick enough - ooooooh it's exciting stuff!

They won't get anywhere near that many in. Apparently the Taunton scoreboard says there is a minimum of 28 overs left in the day, and there have to be 16 in the final hour. Given that Somerset will probably be on the go slow to secure the draw if they get 20 overs in by 4:30 that would give Lancs a total of 36 overs to chase the score - equivalent to a RRR of 5.86. Even 46 overs (which seems rather optimistic) would require over 4.5 runs an over, rather more than the 3.8 RPO they scored at in the first innings.

you have a point but boundaries are short at Taunton and its porbably the easiest ground to score really quickly at

Lancashire 32-0 off 5 overs at tea. Can they score 190 in 28 overs - ish - that's around 7 an over to win theur first Championship since 1934? At this rate they should total about 180 more giving them a total around 212 - but they need to score around 8 an over and not lose too many wickets for the whole session to make certsain. anything less will be just too close for comfort!. But surely that have to go for the win! Challenging!

Warwickshire seem to be settling for a draw at the RoseBowl which has a reputation for getting lower and slower as the game goes on

What a season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right down to the final session!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know - I was just clutching at straws.

Warwickshire seem to be giving up at the RoseBowl which has a reputation for getting lower and slower as the game goes on

I think Lancs will do it. 3 or 4 quick wickets is the only reason they wouldn't, IMHO.

Lancs scoring at 7 an over for the first 9 overs, going well. 65 is a huge chunk out of the chase already, 146 required...

Reminds me of this nail biting afternoon............................

It was a remarkable finale to the season, the title race going down to the last ball of the last match. The day ebbed and flowed but in the end Lancashire fell agonisingly, tantalisingly short of ending 73 years of waiting for a Championship. The title was Sussex's, but it was a damned close-run thing.

Lancashire's quest ended in heroic failure after a nail-biting season finale at The Oval. Having been set a county record 489 to win against Surrey, Lancashire fell 24 runs short as their last remaining hope, Dominic Cork, was bowled by Murtaza Hussain for 47 with the shadows lengthening and four-and-a-bit overs remaining.

On what the groundsman Bill Gordon told Cricinfo was "still a decent track", Lancashire lost two early wickets before VVS Laxman and Stuart Law set them on their way. At lunch they were 178 for 2, up with the asking rate of five an over, and they continued that pace in the afternoon, despite losing Laxman for a superb hundred. The match turned in the penultimate over of the afternoon session when Jade Dernbach removed Law and Steve Croft.

Lancashire's tail refused to buckle. Glenn Chapple made 29 and Sajid Mahmood 26, but Surrey continued to chip away to keep Sussex and Lancashire supporters on tenterhooks. When Oliver Newby was dismissed by Jade Dernbach for 4, Lancashire were still 37 runs adrift with only the No. 11 Gary Keedy to come, and valiantly though they tried, the requirement was just too much.

The Championship trophy and cheque for £100,000 had been waiting at Hove but ECB officials were poised to rush back to London. In the end Cork sized up a sweep shot, Murtaza defeated his flailing bat, and the dream was over. At the end of it all, Lancashire's captain Mark Chilton was in tears. "I am proud of what our guys have done today," he said. "They've been fabulous. I thought to even get close was a phenomenal effort ...the lads are just broken."

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
We had just lost to Yeovil that afternoon. Hot footed it down to the County Ground and watched that match on the scoreboard.

A brilliant way to end what was a disappointing (up until then) and nerve racking day.

Somerset 380 & 310

Lancashire 480 & 80/0 (11.2 ov)

Lancashire require another 131 runs with 10 wickets remaining

At this rate it will take them another 112 balls to score the needed runs and win the Championship

They need to score at 6.5 an over and are scoring at 7.59 (now 93-0 of 12)

now 101-0 off 13 - need another 110 to win

130-0 cruising now...

I think Lancs can actually get a tie at 210 and still win the title, 211 to win this match and the title (as long as draw at Rose Bowl).

*edit - wicket. Horton out 55.

Looks like the title will be heading to Old Trafford, looks like we won't hear the end of this for the next 100 years with Bumble, Atherton etc. OH THE JOY!!!!

but it took a former Sussex catain and coach to get them over the line - Hats off to Mr Moores
