Profile Wayne Parnell is a naturally gifted allrounder who bats and bowls left-handed, and who seems to have been earmarked for success from a young age. Parnell began playing for Eastern Province's U-13 side when he was 12 and was captain the following year. He didn't make the U-15 side initially, but at the age of 15 began to play for Eastern Province and South Africa at the U-19 level. He made his first-class debut for Eastern Province in 2006-07 and was also part of South Africa's Under-19 squad for the 2006 World Cup in Sri Lanka. The experience he gained over the years brought him the captaincy for the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008 and he led by example: taking 18 wickets, the most in the tournament, and scoring useful runs in the middle-order to steer South Africa into the final. His best performance came in the quarter-final against Bangladesh, when he took 6 for 8 after scoring 57. The South Africa selectors were already taking note and he went on the Emerging Players tour of Australia before a call-up to the senior one-day squad for the series in early 2009. After a modest debut against the Australians, he became the youngest player to be handed a national contract by Cricket South Africa (CSA). He soon repaid their faith in him with a terrifically impressive performance in just his second ODI in April 2009. Parnell demolished Australia in partnership with Dale Steyn, picking up 4 for 25 and a well-deserved Man-of-the-Match award. He put in a stand-out performance at the Twenty20 World Cup later that year, picking up 9 wickets at an economy rate of under 6 runs an over. After a successful stint with county Kent, Parnell's star continued to rise when he made his Test debut against England in the fourth Test at the Wanderers in January 2010. Later that month he also found himself with a new IPL contract, snapped up by Delhi Daredevils for $610,000 .

Is this his biog or his obit ?

Not really odd- Quick bowlers are like gold dust at the moment and beggars can't be choosers in a buyers market. Their pedigrees were both decent enough and they filled our initial criteria of being avaiable for the whole of the season. SO you try nd snap ones when they become avaibale, and there is claarly little in the home players to convince anyone of doing otherwise.

Parnell's record is decent enough but seems to try and bowl too fast and consequently over pitches for our wickets and end up over pitching or losing his line. Sort of thisng that should improve with experience. Arif just seems intent on bowling short all the time.

Have you seen either Parnell or Arif play this year.

Parnell is a thick bowler. Yes he can fling it down at 90mph, but he offers so little variety that eventually batsmen getting the better off him. Pace will get you by on the bouncy pitches in South Africa, but over here you need some variety.

Arif does not look good enough, his only contribution of note has been with the bat not the bowl. It is also wrong that Arif is keeping players such as Hatchett, Thorp and even Rollings out of the squads.

You just knew that Parnell was going to get smashed all over the place and be out first (or was it third) ball. It beggars belief that he has continued to be selected. Time to forget the overseas mercenaries and play the Sussex lads-for better or worse.

Yup - 31 days at cricket this season :drink::drink::drink::drink::cheers:

Agreewith you about Parnell just flinging it down but he's not a thick bowler - he just needs someone to point ou that he needs something more in this country. I seem to recall that allan Donald was able to "fling it down at 90 mph" and was pretty good for warwickshire.
Hatchett hasn't done anything to force himself into the first team - Thorp and Rollings aren't good enough for the first XI yet

Well then you are far more forgiving of crap fast bowlers than me or you have got so use to the shite that played for Sussex pre 2000 that you just accept it as the norm.

Cos what we experienced pre 2000 is the norm. what we had from 2003-2007 was totally not the norm for this county.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
If you thought the pre 2000 pace bowlers were crap (although I would question that Imran, Le Roux, Snow, Stephenson, Dodemaide plus a few others could be described as crap - although there was admittedly plenty of other rubbish around who ran in faster than they bowled), you shoud have seen some of the alleged "spinners" we used to play before Mushtaq.

Phillips and Bates were quality performers, at something.
