Of course you're totally right, what I'm saying is, even if it WERE the case that it's just students from out of town, and they all vote Green, I still don't think the student vote is a less valid part of the make up of Brighton than the Rottingdean vote.

Agree that the green vote this time is obviously not just students, disagree that the student vode is as valid as the rottingdean vote.

What do any of those things have to do with Communism? Or are you AIMING to make yourself look like an ignorant twat?

I ask merely for information.

That aim was achieved on NSC years ago.

All votes are equally valid no matter where you live or which particular party you vote for.

Brighton - In your face
So do you think we will have an official Green/Lab coalition or will they go it alone and just cosy up to a few labour councillors every so often.

With such a big gap between Green and Tory they only need 5 out of 11 Labour votes so I think they go it alone. This seems a long time since Mears tried to remove Hove Drive cycle lanes. Great stuff.

With PR,

Labour and greens would have ended up with 19 members each. First past the post is a total farce.

The Greens really wind me up, all the nice fluffy stuff about carbon emissions, saving trees doing our bit for recycling and generally trying to make the country a nicer place to live, it all sounds lovely and all the former Blairites fall for it hook line and sinker, when in fact the Green manifesto is about a left wing as you could go, some if it makes the Communist party look rational! No one can earn more than they are worth, jobs for everyone, free buses, it goes on and on. How's this going to be funded, well apparently, taxation has fallen to "unacceptably low levels" so in simple terms, it's funded by massive rises in taxation! Can't wait! Will the last one out please turn off the light!

I'm a Blairite and a socialist and even I hate them!

But you can't keep plundering the taxpayers pocket.

I'm not surprised with the Greens win and despite some peoples doubting, watch them team up with Labour. Labour gets in via the backdoor - something they HATED happening to the Lib Dems at national level. Pity the Greens couldn't have got rid of those idiots Morgan and Mitchell though.

I predict the new Green council will :

> Raise council tax next year ( probably at above inflation )
> Reduce rubbish collections to once every two weeks
> Increase parking fees
> Look at options for a congestion charge

On the plus side maybe they might increase recycling collections to every week and introduce green waste collections.

You've left off the increase in resident parking permit charges and extension of parking zones.

Disagree - I can't find the statements right now but Greens and Labour had made a number of statements before the election that they would team up to prevent the Tories having any power. Without an overall majority I would imagine Labour will ensure the Greens make good on that promise.

A Green-led council? We'll be a national laughing stock.:shootself

The Greens have taken the place of the LibDems in Brighton & Hove , many see it as a protest vote against the two main political parties instead of looking at what the Greens really stand for.

I'm not a huge fan of the Greens, I do support some of their policies though. But to suggest their success is a protest vote is fanciful at best.

For some people maybe, but the Green vote has been building for years now. People are actually voting FOR them now rather than against someone else. Given that most voters had an inkling that the Greens would be the largest party this time round they knew they may be voting them into a position of real power, you should not do that likely. The Greens ceased to be a pressure group in Brighton a long time ago. Maybe if the main parties had realised this earlier they would not have done so badly.

Anyway at least we now have council that reflects the progressive values of the majority of the voters in the City, rather than a totally unrepresentative tory cuts machine.

This. And this is the reason I'm glad I have NOT moved away.
