Tesco faces demolishing supermarket extension

Councillors in Bury St Edmunds have refused to grant Tesco retrospective approval for a store extension which was built without planning permission. The council could now force the leading supermarket chain to demolish the extension.


The embarrassing case is just the latest example of Tesco being forced to seek retrospective planning permission.


Tesco has been forced to seek retrospective permission for wind turbines on stores


Last year the supermarket chain was forced to seek backdated approval after it was discovered that its new store in Stockport was 20pc larger than planned and more recently the retailer has also been forced to seek retrospective permission for wind turbines on stores.

The decision by councillors at Edmundsbury Borough Council - against the advice of the council's own planning officers - has set the set the council up for a David and Goliath battle with the UK's largest supermarket chain. Council sources expect Tesco to appeal against the decision.

Incidentally a friend of mine, who coincidentally happens to be Stockports main sponsor, is heavily involved in the anti-tesco movement and he would like to see this news. Which paper did it come from?

I hate Tesco.

They are trying to build a warehouse bigger than Terminal 5 at Heathrow in Hampshire. I think Swampy and his mates are getting ready to move in.

I watched that series on beeb1 or 2 a month or so ago about the supermarkets - I think there was one a night? Anyhow - Tescos appear to be real bulls in the planning market, pushing right to the edge and often over of the planning laws....Really evil stuff to be honest....

Its a tough one - if people really knew what Tescos did to get their suprmarkets built they'd be horrified, but since they offer such cheap shopping, people are happy to look away.....

They do, I saw some in there on Saturday when I was getting a can of fizzy pop.

Maynooth and Tallaght branches don't anyway! They also leave Yazoo out of the fridges so you can't drink it right away

I think you will find that nearly all supermarkets leave it out of the fridges because its UHT so doesnt need to be refrigirated and its kept with the rest of the UHT stuff!

The car park has to be seen to be believed.
They clearly knew damn well how big it was going to be all along, and so did the council.

They even allowed them to completely screw up one of the largest roundabouts in the area, and gave them their own access lane off it.

Clear case of palms being greased!!

I think you will find that nearly all supermarkets leave it out of the fridges because its UHT so doesnt need to be refrigirated and its kept with the rest of the UHT stuff!

Over here its generally kept in the fridge so you can drink it right away. It tastes mank when warm.

If you want to drink it right away and it HAS to be cold go and buy one of the fresh products from the fridge. They taste better anyway because they aren't made with UHT milk.

Nothing equivalent to a strawberry yazoo in the fridge section, though

They did a similar thing with the Tesco Express in Western Road Hove. The old building had a bunch of windows which were of particular architectural interest.

Tesco ripped them out and placed their new bland glass corporate ones instead. The council spotted it and ordered Tesco to restore the originals, only to find that Tesco had destroyed them when it took them out.

Erm, and why did the council stop there? Over here some developers have been made completely reinstate an entire building to its original plans, and then fined multiple hundreds to millions of euros.

In one case they were made reinstate a house, then applied for permission and were allowed knock it - it was an unremarkable 70s detached house but SDCC were getting the message across that knocking anything without permission will get you f***ed.
