Cheeky Monkey said:As a Who fanatic I'm inclined to agree, although being too young to take in the 70s era live I've only seen them in 89, 90 and 98 and at all of these gigs they were past it so I'd hope they weren't getting your vote off the back of this Townshend/Daltrey Hollywood gig alone.
For the last bit; Not at all CM, I saw them several times with Keith Moon (only twice since his death), and might I just mention QUADROPHENIA....the most incredible album by anyone? It spanks ANY and EVERY Beatles album works inc SGT Pepper (or Revolver or Abbey Road, LPs I liked more), and there has not been a superior set in music, imho.
Dylan's Blood On the Tracks or Bringing It All back Home (disregarding the British titles for a moment, to compare with all the World's music) were outstanding as records - but the magnificence of Quadrophenia has proved unsurpassable so far. Also a 'concept LP', it stands as a work of towering genius.
Live, The WHO just have too much strength of material to draw from, and they have never been underpowered in delivering the goods when I've seen them.
The Beatles are difficult to assess live, as their brilliant compositions over their career were drowned out by screaming girls, on radio broadcasts tamed by BBC coldness, and their early retirement from gigging left us bereft of much evidence (and them of income!)
Queen were outstanding as a live spectacle indeed, but their LPs I found inconsistent or over the top. The Stones too were always a good live act, and Let It Bleed has to be considered a top record of rock too. They run close imho, but yet I still regard Quad as a higher work.
Led Zeppelin stand among the greatest too, although occasionally coming across as contrived (Plant's flowery meanderings were repetitive and trite) and self-indulgent (drum solos for 30 minutes never endeared me to a band) but they did have their acoustic set among the heavies, which were memorable.
Pink Floyd. Now, this band also made some excellent 60's singles, and Dark Side - The Wall - Meddle - Wish You Were Here - Division Bell .....all astounding albums!! Live they blow minds, a transcendent experience.
In comparison though, the WHO ran the adrenaline a notch higher, and the higher planes reached were something of a visual or aural union between band and audience.
Nope, I just cannot think of anyone better than The WHO
