Likewise, we seem to have mucked around a young chap in the formative years of his career.

In what respect has anyone 'mucked him around'? That's a very odd statement.

Every football club signs a load of young prospects. For each of those lads its an OPPORTUNITY. Some thrive and take it, and progress, like Agdestein, who is now with the first team in Spain. Some fail to progress, and move on, like Bergkamp it seems.

Had their performance in training, development matches, etc been the other way round, no doubt Roland would be in Spain, and Toby would be moving on.

But if it was a signing 'forced on Gus', then Bergkamp may have been onto a loser straight from the start with Gus digging his heels in about playing him, eventually leaving to that Stephenson chap leaving. Obviously this is complete guesswork.

I don't really think that Gus would have been so unprofessional and childish as to not play Bergkamp just because he wasn't his signing?

He might not have liked the fact that he wasn't involved in the signing but, had Bergkamp shown the required promise, I'm sure he would have played him.

The lad may be disappointed but I can't see that he has been 'mucked around.'

Gus isn't a dick. If the guy offered something decent, Gus would have used him.
