Agreed, they were totally disappointing.
Japan had their moments, with some decent songs like Nightporter and Taking Islands in Africa - but they were otherwise awful and did loads of shite songs about China as if we cared about feckin' China forfuxsake. Richard Barbieri is now a member of the brilliant Porcupine Tree though, and they RULE!
