Ashley Barnes is clearly good enough for us.......

Lots of supposition there mate. If we do sign another striker I'd put money on him being a big target man for when things go a bit pear shaped and we need a different approach. Barnes will always be competing with CMS and Hoskins so is a number 3 by the looks of it and not a 4/5 meaning plenty of starts and sub appearances- and I'm convinced he's a key part of Gus's plans.

As for Buckley he's a wide MF .. competing with KLL and Noone .. nout to do with this I reckon
Fair play. But I thought Buckley was a winger come forward.

Acker79 has just about summed this up. Gus is creating a squad from which he can pick and choose to play different styles. I can understand his frustration with the loss of the extra two subs. With only 5 subs he now requires more versatile players, rather than specialists. I don't know where he sees Barnes fitting in longer term, but at 21 and a great goalscoring record he will only get better. I don't see his misses on Saturday being any worse than those of CMS - and I ain't complaining.

I can't say the prospect of signing lambert has ever excited me. But I'm not overly familiar with other teams' players. I am more than happy with barnes and his contribution.

I think Buckley isn't a threat to Barnes. Gus played two strikers with buckley replacing sparrow. I also think when there are two striker positions, it makes the subs choice 2 and 3, not 3 and 4, and that's if they're interchangeable. If, say you have two left sided forwards and two right sided forwards, I'd say you have two first choice strikers and two second choice, but that's semantics, really.

I would also argue that in modern football, at least the way gus plays it, there isn't so much a pecking order as what is the preferred way to play, what is the preferred way to play against specific opponents (when the preferred way to play generally isn't necessarily effective or likely to work), options for changing the game, and which players are best suited to it. Last year we didn't have a first 11 we had a first 14-16, changing depending on what Gus wanted to do depending on opponents, home or away. Often times Gus left Lualua, and then later Noone, on the bench because his first preferred way to play was to wear the team down with the passing game, then when the opponents wer tiring, bring on a pacey winger. if the tactic is there from the beginning was lualua/noone second choice?
I fully understand what you are saying, but I bet a pound to a pinch of shit, that CMS fits in to our "preferred way of playing" all season. I can't see him being left out other than for cup game, injury, international calls ups or fatigue. I know switches his wingers around, but I think thats more down to him seeing them as the more important roles for the way we play, and its a case of letting them run themselves into the ground,, getting kicked around, and then swapping them for a fresh set of legs, whereas not many teams are going to have full backs on the bench, as they are not seen as game changers. I think you may well see a fair few full backs seeing second half red cards this season against us, whereas I don't see the strikers being switched around too much. CMS is going to start 99% of the league games he available for, and I don't see Hoskins missing too many. I struggle to see apart from injury, where this new striker fits in (unless as someone said from the bench).

Poyet does like to switch the midfield/wingers around, but the defence and strikers I think have been, will be pretty much the same face throughtout the season.

The goal has been shown on ssn,it's by no means a screamer but a decent strike from 25 yards.I don't remember him scoring many last season from distance so maybe he has added another string to his bow.

As the OP and generally a fan of Ashley's, I felt I had to bounce this thread tonight to hold my hands up. For the last three games (at least) he has looked woeful - this afternoon included. Why Gus didn't bring on Hoskins I don't know, but Barnes looks well short of what we need up front right now. Let's hope this is just a blip and that by the end of the season I'm proved right!

I actually wonder if some players were being given a last chance to shine in today's match, hence other than GD, were left the full 90 minutes which absolutely defies reason in some cases.

Thats got to be it now for Barnes for a while, whilst I admit I am not his biggest fan. I defy anyone to say he has played anything other than shit for the past three or four games. By his own admission in today's programme he was shocking against Palace. I'm sorry he is just not up to this level, he can take a good penalty now i'll give him that but that does not warrant a starting place. It's got to be Hoskins for the next few games or maybe a loan signing.
