As a youth, whats the thing you're proudest of doing?

As did I, but that's beside the point.

With regards to your £20 a week flat payment for going to college theory, that is possibly the worst idea I've ever heard. The point of CHOOSING to go to college is to further your education, and the results and certificates at the end of the 2 years should be reward enough.

I chose to go to college so I could go to university. I would never expect money for doing so, and thankfully it will be compulsary for kids to stay on at college or do an apprenticeship until they're 18.

I know I'm straying from the topic, but you've brought these points up and the point of a forum is to debate!

Fair play!

My "but this thread" wasn't just aimed at you. Quite like the discussion

Yes, in an ideal world the ability to do Uni at the end would be reward enough, but daily running costs such as lunch, travel etc add up, and if you're unable to get a job, nor sign on because your in full time education, then it becomes harder.

Dont' get me wrong. We've got a much larger proportion of lazy wankers than any generation before us.

But we've also got it harder to actually get jobs, because work places can now ask for experience as a requirement rather than as a luxury because the older, getting close to retirement unemployed have that over us. I'd be well proud to get a job, and have gone about handing my CV out gagging for a job

Good luck and remember, it's a job itself to find a job. Stay with it and don't become another statistic of this country.

I agree, but you have to be persistant. It took me several attempts to get my part time job, but it paid off as it lead to weekend work and full time work when I wanted it. And if you want to go to University, make sure you have money saved up because the loan you get (it might have changed), will cover your accomodation but thats it.

For me, it'll be getting thorugh tomorrow.

I'm taking 8 or 9 young people up to the International Youth Arts Theatre Festival where we will be opening the festival which sees people from all over the world come to Kingston to show their work. The group i work with is a not for profit, open equal oppertunities group that provides this kind of event for everyone who is interested and committed enough.

We've lost our leading lady who was told dates a week after she booked a holiday, and her replacement has had an accident which means one of the young people have to take up a role she spent a week or two filling in for when we were divising our piece.

If we get through tomorrow, put on a good show and it all goes well, i'll be really proud because i've ran the youth theatre with another person my age for the last year. Just being able to provide this oppertunity to talented yet hard-to-reach young people is a great feeling.

3 things, all related. I used to play trumpet in a marching band, and:

In 1977, I was aged 12, and we won every single award in our class in a band competition at The Royal Albert Hall (I ended up playing there about 6 times)

In the same year, our band was picked the for The Queens Silver Jubillee Procession in London which culminated in performing at a huge bonfire party in Windsor Home Park and I met Prince Phillip

A couple of years later, in the same band, part of routine was myself and a girl in the band playing a duet whilst the rest of the band marched round us, which we performed at the National Championships at Wembley Arena.

Nice one Tay, at last someone gets the thread heading in the right direction. Giving life to someone else, or saving it, has to be one of the greatest feelings imaginable...saw a story on the news today of an Army L/Sgt who was awarded the MC for saving the lives of an old Afghani and four children, that is heroic!

 Love the way it shoots FDM's Gloves 'look at me' thread down in flames with six simple words.

Its not a "look at me" thread. Just interested in what other people have done.

Theres some quote about experience and it being the best thing to share or somthing but i forget it.

Getting on the Goldstone pitch is however, f***ing awesome. :ascarf:

Same here. Can't stand the tax-dodgers. Stop EMA right now. Why should they get paid to turn up to college and socialise?

The point isn't to "pay" people to go to College, its to make sure that those who come from low income families have the ability to get to college, pay for any books and stationary which need purchasing and go on any neccessary trips. Clearly there are those who abuse the system, but by and large it works very effectively and allows many people who wouldn't otherwise have such an oppurtunity, to move onto higher education.

If you don't want to take that path then fair enough, getting a job straight from college is the right option for you, but there are undeniable benefits to A levels which many (including myself) feel they want to profit from.
