League considers scrapping draws

Football League chairman meet on Thursday
The Football League board is to consider a proposal to scrap draws and decide matches by penalty shoot-outs, BBC Five Live understands.
The idea will be discussed by Football League chairmen and chief executives at a board meeting on Thursday.

No timescale has been given for implementing the change if the chairmen go ahead with the proposal.

"Why can't we just have a draw?" Bournemouth boss Kevin Bond told the Daily Echo newspaper.

The idea was originally put forward in the recent Football League Fans Survey.

There are currently two proposals to be considered - a traditional penalty shoot-out or where a player would have eight seconds to try and score after receiving the ball on the half-way line.

"I don't agree with it because I think it's too much of a radical change," Bond added.

"I'm very open-minded and I think certain laws of the game need to move with the times but that would be too much of a drastic measure."

Sod penalty shoot outs...They should put a detonation device in the ball that goes off after every 5 minutes...The team with the most surviving or least incapacitated players after 30 minutes wins!

No thats what I call a penalty!!

The ONLY reason this is being considered is to try and improve our chances of winning the World Cup.

Everywhere
Imagine if a manchester derby north london derby or any derby in this country went to penalties consistently, after the game would be carnage week in week out.
Just leave the game as it is, it has worked for years so leave it the f*** alone.

Tactics and playing skills would change.

Teams would pack their defence to play for a goalless draw and then win the shoot-out, after bringing on their three specialist penalty takers as substitutes in the 89th minute.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
The only two things they need to change at the moment is stopping players shielding the ball over the deadball line and following the lead of rugby referees. Only talk to the captains and perpetrators, anyone else should be booked.

In fact, perhaps a yellow card should be a sin binning? Would stop time wasting immediatly.

I agree with BoF. Would also punish those that dive or cheat in anyway through video evidence. Would stamp it out.

Well, here's one American who thinks it's a dumbass idea.

Add an OT period, OK.

Worst case, add sudden-death overtime.

But shootouts are, for all practical purposes, no different than deciding the outcome by drawing straws.

The NHL went this route, and for my money, it isn't proper hockey any more. Wouldn't be football without draws.

...still overly f***ing with rules that have worked without problem for quite some time.

Upping the win points to 3 seriously minimised the chances of teams playing for a draw. The idea of a draw is there for a reason - two teams equally matched (in theory...). It needs keeping.

Quite right.

If you're going to do something stupid just to avoid a draw, why not have a sudden death overtime with no goalies?

Or better still, respect a draw for what it is.
